The Map Chamber is a large, circular stone chamber created specifically for the Hogwarts Legacy video game and does not appear in the original seven novels. It serves as a secret base of operations for the player. The chamber is accessed through a hidden entrance behind a tapestry in a corridor near the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom area (video game). The chamber's primary feature is its floor, which is a vast, detailed, and magically animated map of Hogwarts and its surrounding highlands. This map can display real-time events and highlight locations of interest. The domed ceiling is enchanted to reflect the current sky, similar to the Great Hall. Lining the stone walls are large archways, four of which contain talking portraits of its creators, a group of former Hogwarts professors known as the Keepers. According to the narrative of the video game, the chamber was constructed in the 16th century by the four Keepers. They created it to safeguard knowledge of a rare and powerful form of magic known as Ancient Magic. They feared the misuse of this power, particularly after a student named Isidora Morganach began experimenting with extracting emotion from others. The Keepers built the chamber and a series of trials to test any future student who could perceive Ancient Magic, to ensure they were a worthy guardian of its secrets. The chamber remained hidden for centuries until it was rediscovered in the 1890-91 school year by a new fifth-year student (video game).
The Map Chamber is central to the plot of the Hogwarts Legacy video game, acting as the main hub for the primary questline. It is here that the protagonist is introduced to the portraits of the Keepers, who reveal the history of Ancient Magic and the threat posed by the goblin Ranrok and the dark wizard Victor Rookwood. Throughout the game, the player returns to the Map Chamber to receive guidance and new objectives from the Keepers. The portals to the four Keepers' trials, designed to test the protagonist's character and abilities, are accessed from this room. The enchanted map on the floor is frequently used to brief the player on the locations of subsequent quests and to track the antagonists' activities across the region (video game).
