Office of the Minister for Magic

Location Information

Description and History

The Office of the Minister for Magic is the primary workplace and administrative centre for the leader of the British wizarding community, located on the top level of the Ministry of Magic. The office is a large, fine, circular room panelled in dark wood. A magnificent fireplace is set into one wall, serving as a key point of entry and exit via the Floo Network. This fireplace has a direct connection to the office of the Muggle Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street, allowing for secure and immediate communication between the two leaders. A key feature of the office is a large window that is magically enchanted to show the weather outside. However, the weather it displays is not necessarily the actual weather in London, but rather a reflection of the prevailing mood and state of affairs within the Ministry and the wider wizarding world. During the relative peace of Cornelius Fudge's early tenure, it was consistently sunny. When Rufus Scrimgeour took office at the start of the Second Wizarding War, the view was described as overcast and chilly. The circular walls are adorned with portraits of previous Ministers for Magic, such as Ulick Gamp. These portraits are not merely decorative; they are enchanted to be able to speak, offer advice to the current Minister, and move between their own frames. A small, unassuming portrait of a frog-like man with a silver wig hangs in the Muggle Prime Minister's office, and its purpose is to announce the arrival of the Minister for Magic before he or she travels through the fireplace.

Role in the Story

The office is the setting for several significant confrontations and discussions throughout the series. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it is the location where Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter confront Cornelius Fudge immediately following the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Dumbledore swiftly incapacitates Fudge, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Dawlish, and Percy Weasley to ensure Harry's testimony is heard, and it is from here that Fudge rushes to the Atrium to witness the return of Lord Voldemort firsthand. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the office is the scene of the transition of power from Cornelius Fudge to Rufus Scrimgeour. Fudge brings Scrimgeour through the fireplace to formally introduce him to the Muggle Prime Minister. Later in the book, Arthur Weasley escorts Harry to this office to meet with Scrimgeour. The new Minister attempts to recruit Harry as a “poster boy” for the Ministry, hoping to use his influence to boost public morale, an offer which Harry firmly refuses. During the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, after the Ministry falls to Lord Voldemort, the office is occupied by Pius Thicknesse, who serves as a puppet Minister under the Imperius Curse. The office becomes the centre of Voldemort's totalitarian regime within the Ministry.
