Frisbee
Object Information
- Owners: Ron Weasley (a Fanged Frisbee)
- Maker: Fred Weasley and George Weasley (creators of the Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes version of the Fanged Frisbee)
Description and Appearance
Magical Frisbees are flying discs, similar to their Muggle counterparts, but enchanted with aggressive or troublesome properties. They are considered prank items and are banned at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At least two distinct types are known to exist in the wizarding world:
- Fanged Frisbee: This type is enchanted to grow sharp fangs and bite at people or objects while in flight. The version developed and sold by Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes was purple and would snarl and snap audibly as it flew through the air.
- Ever-Bashing Frisbee: The specific appearance of this Frisbee is unknown. Its name strongly suggests it is charmed to fly around and persistently hit, or “bash,” people and objects in its vicinity, similar in behaviour to a less dangerous Bludger.
Magical Properties and Usage
The primary purpose of magical Frisbees is amusement through mischievous chaos.
- The Fanged Frisbee is an offensive toy. When thrown, it actively seeks targets to bite. It is capable of causing minor damage, as one was seen nearly taking a bite out of a tapestry in the Gryffindor Tower.
- The properties of the Ever-Bashing Frisbee are not explicitly detailed in the novels, but its name implies a charm of continuous motion and collision, making it an extreme nuisance and a hazard in enclosed spaces.
History
Both the Fanged Frisbee and the Ever-Bashing Frisbee were known magical objects long before the 1990s. In 1994, both items appeared on a long list of forbidden objects posted by caretaker Argus Filch at the start of the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts. During the 1995-1996 school year, Fred and George Weasley began developing their own line of joke products. They were observed testing early prototypes of Fanged Frisbees on their fellow students in the Gryffindor common room, marking the item as a future product for their planned joke shop. By the summer of 1996, the Fanged Frisbee was a popular and commercially available product at the twins' highly successful shop, Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes, located at number ninety-three, Diagon Alley.
Role in the Story
Magical Frisbees primarily function as world-building elements that illustrate the playful and hazardous nature of magical toys in the wizarding world.
- In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, their inclusion on Filch's list of banned items helps establish the heightened security and stricter rules imposed on Hogwarts students.
- In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the Weasley twins' development of Fanged Frisbees showcases their inventive talent and serves as an act of rebellion against the oppressive authority of Dolores Umbridge.
- In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Ron Weasley purchases a Fanged Frisbee, leading to a moment of light-hearted conflict in the common room when it flies amok. The incident highlights the success of the twins' shop and draws a typical rebuke from a disapproving Hermione Granger, who confiscates it.
Behind the Scenes
- The Fanged Frisbee appears as a collectible item and an obstacle in the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game (video game).
- The name “Frisbee” is a registered trademark of the Wham-O toy company in the Muggle world.
