Hippogriff
Introduction
A Hippogriff is a carnivorous magical beast with the head and forelegs of a giant eagle and the body, hind legs, and tail of a horse. Native to Greece (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), they are intensely proud creatures that demand respect from any witch or wizard who approaches them. The most notable Hippogriff in the series is Buckbeak, who plays a pivotal role in the events of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and aids Harry Potter and his allies in the Second Wizarding War.
Biography
Hippogriffs are first introduced to Harry Potter and his classmates during Rubeus Hagrid's inaugural `Care of Magical Creatures` lesson in their third year. Hagrid brings a herd of them to the class for the students to study. Following Hagrid's instructions on proper etiquette, Harry successfully approaches and befriends one of the Hippogriffs, Buckbeak, and enjoys a brief flight around the Hogwarts grounds. However, Draco Malfoy insults Buckbeak, who retaliates by slashing Malfoy's arm with his talons. This incident leads Lucius Malfoy to use his influence at the Ministry of Magic to have Buckbeak sentenced to death by the `Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures`. With the aid of a `Time-Turner`, Harry and Hermione Granger rescue Buckbeak just moments before his scheduled execution. Buckbeak then helps `Sirius Black` escape from Hogwarts custody, and the two become fugitives together. They reside at `12 Grimmauld Place` until Sirius's death. Following Sirius's will, ownership of Buckbeak passes to Harry. Harry arranges for Buckbeak to be returned to Hagrid's care under the alias Witherwings to protect his identity. During the `Battle of Hogwarts`, Buckbeak (as Witherwings) fiercely defends Harry from a Dementor and later leads the `Thestrals` in an attack against `Lord Voldemort`'s giants.
Physical Appearance and Personality
A Hippogriff is a striking hybrid creature. It possesses the head of a giant eagle with a cruel, steel-coloured beak and large, bright orange eyes. Its front half, including its forelegs, is covered in feathers, and its forelegs end in sharp, foot-long talons. The rear half is that of a horse, complete with a tail. They are known to come in various colours, including stormy grey, bronze, pinkish roan, and gleaming chestnut. The defining trait of a Hippogriff's personality is its immense pride. It is crucial to show proper respect by bowing and waiting for the Hippogriff to bow in return before making any physical contact. Maintaining eye contact is also essential, as blinking is seen as a sign of untrustworthiness. If offended, a Hippogriff will not hesitate to attack. However, once a person has earned their respect, they can be fiercely loyal and affectionate companions, as demonstrated by Buckbeak's relationship with Harry and Hagrid.
Magical Abilities and Skills
- Flight: Hippogriffs are powerful fliers, capable of covering long distances and carrying the weight of at least two humans.
- Strength: They possess significant physical strength in both their equine and avian parts.
- Combat Prowess: Their sharp beaks and formidable talons are dangerous natural weapons, which they use effectively for hunting and self-defence.
Relationships
According to the Ministry of Magic classification system, Hippogriffs are rated XXX, meaning a “competent wizard should be able to cope.” Their relationship with the Wizarding World is one of caution and respect. Only trained individuals like Rubeus Hagrid, who successfully bred a herd of them, are typically suited to handle them. The strict etiquette required for a safe approach means that interactions can be dangerous for the unwary or disrespectful, as seen in Draco Malfoy's case. Their loyalty to those they trust, such as Hagrid and Harry, is unwavering.
Etymology
The name “Hippogriff” is derived from the Ancient Greek word “hippos” (ἵππος), meaning horse, and the “gryps” (γρύψ), which refers to the `Griffin`. A `Griffin` is itself a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The Hippogriff is thus a magical crossbreed, the offspring of a Griffin and a mare.
Behind the Scenes
- The Hippogriff is a creature from classical and medieval mythology. It was first mentioned by the Roman poet Virgil in his Eclogues. Its most famous appearance is in Ludovico Ariosto's 16th-century epic poem, Orlando Furioso.
- In the film adaptations of the *Harry Potter* series, Buckbeak and the other Hippogriffs were created using computer-generated imagery (CGI).
- The in-universe textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them notes that Hippogriffs build nests on the ground and lay a single, large, fragile egg. It also confirms that breeding them is a skilled profession, as they are classified as dangerous creatures.
