Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is a large, freshwater loch located in the west of the Scottish Lowlands. In the Wizarding World, it is primarily known as a habitat for various magical creatures. In 1994, the loch became a site of interest for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures at the Ministry of Magic. Operatives were sent to the loch to capture a creature to be used in the Triwizard Tournament being held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Role in the Story

Loch Lomond is mentioned by Ludo Bagman during his commentary on the First Task of the Triwizard Tournament. While Harry Potter faced the Hungarian Horntail, Bagman discussed the challenges of procuring dangerous creatures for the tournament. He revealed to the crowd that the Ministry of Magic had recently captured a “water demon” from Loch Lomond for use in the Second Task. This creature was intended to be one of the obstacles the champions would face in the Great Lake. The comment highlights the scale and danger of the tournament and the Ministry's involvement in sourcing its challenges.

  • Loch Lomond is a real location in Scotland and is the largest inland stretch of water in Great Britain by surface area.
  • The “water demon” mentioned by Ludo Bagman as having been captured from the loch is identified as a Kelpie (Pottermore).
