It is run by the resident Matron, [[Madam Poppy Pomfrey]]. * **Key Features:** A bright, airy, and exceptionally clean long room with a row of beds, each with crisp white sheets. Privacy screens are used to partition off beds when needed. The wing has several large windows that look out over the [[Hogwarts]] grounds. =====Description and History===== The [[Hospital Wing]] serves as the primary medical facility for the students and staff of [[Hogwarts]]. It is a place of quiet and order, meticulously maintained by its long-serving Healer, [[Madam Pomfrey]]. She is known for her strictness regarding visitors and her fierce dedication to her patients' recovery. The wing is equipped to handle a vast range of magical injuries and ailments, from mending broken bones in an instant to regrowing an entire arm's worth of bones over a painful night with a potion like [[Skele-Gro]]. [[Madam Pomfrey]]'s expertise is formidable; however, she acknowledges her limitations. She cannot mend certain psychological wounds or reverse damage caused by very powerful [[Dark Magic]]. For example, she could not cure the petrified victims of the [[Basilisk]] without the [[Mandrake]] Restorative Draught, nor could she heal the cursed wounds inflicted upon [[Katie Bell]] by a dark artifact or [[Albus Dumbledore]]'s withered hand. The wing is a sanctuary for recovery and has been the site of many crucial conversations and events throughout [[Harry Potter]]'s time at school. =====Role in the Story===== The [[Hospital Wing]] is a frequently used location that serves as a backdrop for healing, reflection, and significant plot exposition. * **[[Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone]]**: [[Harry Potter]] wakes up here after his confrontation with [[Professor Quirrell]] and [[Lord Voldemort]]. [[Albus Dumbledore]] visits him and explains the nature of his mother's magical protection, the purpose of the [[Philosopher's Stone]], and why [[Professor Snape]] seemed to despise him. * **[[Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets]]**: Harry spends a night here regrowing the bones in his arm after a misguided spell from [[Gilderoy Lockhart]]. During his stay, he is visited by [[Dobby]] the house-elf, who confesses to sealing the barrier to [[Platform Nine and Three-Quarters]]. Later in the year, the wing houses the petrified victims of the [[Basilisk]]: [[Colin Creevey]], [[Justin Finch-Fletchley]], [[Nearly Headless Nick]], [[Penelope Clearwater]], and [[Hermione Granger]]. * **[[Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban]]**: Following the events at the [[Shrieking Shack]], Harry, Ron, and Hermione all find themselves in the [[Hospital Wing]]. It is from a bed in the wing that Harry and Hermione use the [[Time-Turner]] to travel back in time, rescue [[Buckbeak]] the [[Hippogriff]], and save [[Sirius Black]] from receiving the [[Dementor's Kiss]]. * **[[Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire]]**: Harry is briefly treated here by [[Madam Pomfrey]] for the cut on his leg after his duel with [[Voldemort]] in the [[Little Hangleton]] graveyard. * **[[Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix]]**: [[Professor McGonagall]] is taken to the [[Hospital Wing]] to recover after being hit with four simultaneous [[Stunning Spells]] while defending [[Hagrid]] from [[Dolores Umbridge]] and a group of [[Aurors]]. * **[[Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince]]**: The wing sees several major incidents. [[Ron Weasley]] is treated here after being accidentally poisoned. [[Katie Bell]] is brought here after being cursed by a necklace intended for [[Dumbledore]]. Harry spends time recovering from a cracked skull after a [[Quidditch]] match, and [[Draco Malfoy]] is healed by [[Snape]] here after being hit with Harry's [[Sectumsempra]] curse. * **[[Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows]]**: During the [[Battle of Hogwarts]], the [[Great Hall]] is used as a primary triage center, while the [[Hospital Wing]] is implied to be overwhelmed. After the fighting pauses, the casualties are laid out in the [[Great Hall]], where Harry sees the bodies of [[Fred Weasley]], [[Remus Lupin]], and [[Nymphadora Tonks]]. =====Known Areas Within===== * **The Main Ward:** The primary space of the [[Hospital Wing]], this long room contains a neat row of beds for patients. The room is well-lit by large windows and kept immaculately clean. * **Matron's Office:** A small office adjoining the main ward, belonging to [[Madam Pomfrey]]. She is seen emerging from it to tend to patients. =====Behind the Scenes===== * In the film adaptations, the [[Hospital Wing]] set is famously located within a large clock tower structure. The intricate moving gears of the clock are visible through the large arched window behind the beds, becoming an iconic visual element of the cinematic [[Hogwarts]]. (film)
