Every member of the core family, from Arthur Weasley and Molly Weasley to all seven of their children—Bill Weasley, Charlie Weasley, Percy Weasley, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Ron Weasley, and Ginny Weasley—is described as having it. However, due to its strong association with the Weasley family, it becomes a target for prejudice from pure-blood supremacists like the Malfoy family. For them, the Weasleys' red hair is a symbol of everything they despise: a large, financially struggling family with a proud acceptance of Muggles and Muggle-borns. It is used less as a prejudice against the hair color itself and more as a convenient marker for the family they disdain.

In real-world British folklore, red hair has historical associations with Celtic heritage, fiery tempers, and, in some periods, witchcraft. While not explicitly confirmed as an influence, these cultural undertones resonate with the passionate, brave, and sometimes hot-headed nature of the Weasley family. J.K. Rowling has also stated in interviews that she has always liked red hair and decided from the beginning that Harry Potter's best friend, Ron Weasley, would be a redhead (J.K. Rowling interview).
