Andromeda Tonks (née Black)

Andromeda Tonks was a pure-blood witch and the middle daughter of Cygnus and Druella Black (née Rosier). She was the sister of Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy, and the favourite cousin of Sirius Black. Cast out from the House of Black for marrying the Muggle-born wizard Ted Tonks, Andromeda rejected her family's fanatical belief in pure-blood supremacy. During the Second Wizarding War, she and her husband aided the Order of the Phoenix, and after suffering the loss of her husband, daughter, and son-in-law, she took on the responsibility of raising her grandson, Teddy Lupin.

Andromeda was born into the ancient and staunchly pure-blood House of Black. As a member of this family, she was raised with the expectation that she would uphold their values of blood purity. However, Andromeda fell in love with a Muggle-born Hogwarts student, Ted Tonks. Her decision to marry him was an ultimate act of defiance against her family's ideology. As a result, she was disowned, repudiated by her sisters, and blasted off the Black family tapestry located at 12 Grimmauld Place. Her cousin, Sirius Black, later remarked to Harry Potter that Andromeda was his favourite cousin and “a good woman.”

While not an official member of the Order of the Phoenix, Andromeda and her husband were firm allies. Their home was designated as a safe house for the Order. Following the Battle of the Seven Potters, Harry Potter and Rubeus Hagrid arrived at the Tonks's home. Andromeda, whose strong family resemblance to Bellatrix Lestrange initially startled Harry, demonstrated her kind nature by immediately tending to Hagrid's injuries. The war brought immense tragedy to Andromeda. Her husband, Ted Tonks, was murdered by Snatchers while on the run after refusing to register with the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Shortly after, her daughter, Nymphadora Tonks, and her son-in-law, Remus Lupin, were both killed during the Battle of Hogwarts.

After the death of her daughter and son-in-law, Andromeda became the sole guardian of her infant grandson, Teddy Lupin. Despite her profound losses, she dedicated herself to raising him, with Harry Potter serving as Teddy's godfather.

Andromeda bore a striking resemblance to her older sister, Bellatrix Lestrange, with the same dark eyes and aristocratic features. However, her appearance was softer and kinder. She had light brown hair, unlike Bellatrix's black hair, and her eyes were wider and gentler. In stark contrast to her cruel, sadistic sister Bellatrix and her haughty, prejudiced sister Narcissa, Andromeda was compassionate, brave, and loving. Her marriage to a Muggle-born wizard showcased her ability to see beyond blood status and her courage to defy her formidable family. She was a caring mother and a nurturing caregiver, as seen when she tended to Hagrid's injuries and later when she took on the immense task of raising her grandson alone.

While her specific magical skills are not extensively detailed in the novels, Andromeda was undoubtedly a highly competent and capable witch.

  • Domestic and Healing Magic: She was skilled in domestic magic, as befitting a homemaker, and demonstrated proficiency in basic healing magic by treating Hagrid's wounds after his crash.
  • General Magical Proficiency: As a descendant of the powerful House of Black and having survived two wizarding wars, she would have possessed a solid understanding of a wide range of magic, including defensive spells, necessary for her and her husband to assist the Order of the Phoenix.
  • House: Andromeda and her husband owned a home that was described as “spotlessly clean” and cozy. It was protected by strong enchantments and used as a safe house by the Order of the Phoenix.
  • Wand: The specifications of her wand are unknown.
  • Ted Tonks: Her husband, whom she loved dearly. Their marriage was a testament to her rejection of her family's bigotry and the foundation of her new life. His murder left her devastated.
  • Nymphadora Tonks: Her only child. Andromeda shared a close and loving relationship with her daughter.
  • Bellatrix Lestrange: Her estranged older sister. Due to their opposing loyalties and beliefs, Bellatrix viewed Andromeda as a blood traitor and held her in contempt.
  • Narcissa Malfoy: Her estranged younger sister. Narcissa cut off all contact with Andromeda after her marriage, adhering to the Black family's decree.
  • Sirius Black: Her cousin. Sirius held Andromeda in high esteem, considering her his favourite cousin and a member of the family he could be proud of.
  • Teddy Lupin: Her grandson. After the Battle of Hogwarts, Andromeda became his guardian and devoted her life to raising him.
  • Andromeda: In Greek mythology, Andromeda was a princess offered as a sacrifice to a sea monster, Cetus, before being rescued by the hero Perseus. This name could symbolize Andromeda being chained by her family's dark legacy and “rescued” by her love for Ted Tonks. The name also follows the House of Black's tradition of naming children after stars and constellations, with Andromeda being a prominent constellation in the northern sky.
  • Black: The family surname directly contrasts with the “white” magic and goodness she represents, symbolizing the dark heritage she escaped.
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Andromeda Tonks is not seen, though her home is. Harry and Hagrid are instead met by Ted Tonks and a visibly shaken Nymphadora Tonks.
  • A hand-drawn Black family tapestry created by J.K. Rowling confirms her parents as Cygnus Black and Druella Rosier, and shows her burn mark on the tree next to those of Sirius Black and Alphard Black. (J.K. Rowling supplementary material).
