The Bedazzling Hex is mentioned on one significant occasion during the Second Wizarding War. In August of 1997, Hermione Granger devised a plan to provide a cover story for Ron Weasley's absence from Hogwarts while he accompanied Harry Potter on the hunt for Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. Her plan involved using the Weasley family's attic ghoul as a decoy. Hermione Granger suggested they could “get the ghoul out of the attic and into Ron's bed, and then Bedazzle it so that it looks like Ron with spattergroit.” The intention was that the ghoul, under the effects of the hex, would be mistaken for a seriously ill Ron, whose contagious and disfiguring disease would deter anyone from getting close enough to discover the ruse. The plan was successfully implemented. Later, when the Ministry of Magic had fallen, Death Eater Corban Yaxley mentioned to Pius Thicknesse that the Weasleys claimed their son was too ill with spattergroit to come to Hogwarts. This confirmed that the Bedazzling Hex on the ghoul had effectively convinced Ministry officials and served its purpose of protecting Ron and his family from suspicion.

There is no information on how the Bedazzling Hex is learned or its level of difficulty, though Hermione Granger's knowledge of it suggests it may be advanced magic. It is not specified whether it is part of the standard Hogwarts curriculum. Known counter-spells or methods to negate its effects are not mentioned in the canonical texts.

The name is derived from the English verb “to bedazzle,” which means to greatly impress or enchant someone, sometimes to the point of temporary blindness or confusion. This aligns with the hex's function of creating a distracting or convincing visual illusion that prevents an observer from seeing the true nature of the enchanted object. A “hex” is a category of Dark Magic that causes moderate inconvenience or irritation.

The plotline involving the ghoul in Ron's pyjamas, and therefore the use of the Bedazzling Hex, was omitted from the film adaptation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. (film)
