Location Information
- Type: Country
- Location: Southeastern Europe
- Notable Wizarding Connections: Croatian National Quidditch Team, Dragomir Gorgovitch
Description and History
Croatia is a country located in Southeastern Europe with an established wizarding community. While not mentioned in the original novels, its presence in the wider wizarding world is known primarily through the sport of Quidditch. The Croatian National Quidditch Team is noted for its particularly aggressive style of play. Its Chasers earned the nickname “Cruciatus-throwers” due to their brutal tactics, although they do not actually use the Cruciatus Curse. The team is also known for having highly skilled Seekers (Pottermore).
Role in the Story
Croatia plays no direct role in the events of the Harry Potter series, as it is never mentioned by name in the books. Its significance is expanded upon in supplementary materials written by J.K. Rowling for the Pottermore website. During the 2014 Quidditch World Cup, Croatia played against New Zealand in the first round. The Croatian team mascots, a pair of drakons (described as massive, winged, fire-breathing lizards), went on a rampage after the match, requiring a large number of Magizoologists from the International Confederation of Wizards to subdue them. The incident nearly constituted a major breach of the International Statute of Secrecy (Pottermore).
Behind the Scenes
- All canonical information about wizarding Croatia comes from J.K. Rowling's writings for the Pottermore website (now part of Wizarding World), particularly her coverage of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup. The country is not mentioned in the seven original novels.
- In the video game Hogwarts Legacy, the famous Chudley Cannons Quidditch player, Dragomir Gorgovitch, is identified as being Croatian. He holds the record for the most Quaffle drops by a Chaser (video game).
