- Operator: Transport for London (Muggle authority)
Description and History
The District Line is a major line of the London Underground, the subterranean electric railway system colloquially known as the “Tube” used by Muggles throughout London. The trains on the Underground are described as rumbling and screeching, and the carriages are often crowded with passengers. For most wizards and witches, the workings of the Underground are unfamiliar. Even Arthur Weasley, who is an expert on Muggle artefacts and culture within the Ministry of Magic, found certain aspects of the system, such as the ticket barriers and the use of Muggle money, to be a challenge.
Role in the Story
The District Line is specifically identified by Arthur Weasley as the required route for returning to Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place following Harry Potter's disciplinary hearing at the Ministry of Magic in August 1995. After Harry was cleared of all charges for his use of the Patronus Charm, Mr. Weasley guided him, along with Ron, Fred, and George Weasley, to the Underground, stating that they needed the District Line for their journey. This instance highlights the practical need for members of the Order of the Phoenix to utilize Muggle transportation for discreet movement within central London. Using the Tube allowed them to travel from the heavily-trafficked area of Whitehall to a hidden magical residence without raising suspicion or breaching the International Statute of Secrecy.

Behind the Scenes
The District Line is a real line on the London Underground network. It is distinguished on the official Tube map by the colour green. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry and Mr. Weasley are shown travelling through Westminster Underground station. In reality, Westminster station is served by the Circle, Jubilee, and District Lines, making the depiction consistent with the novel. (film)
