Doxycide

Doxycide is a blackish liquid solution that is typically dispensed from an atomizer or spray bottle. It is noted for its powerful and unpleasant odour; Harry Potter considered its smell to be worse than anything Dudley Dursley's pet python could have produced. Given its poisonous nature, it is presumed to carry a warning label.

The primary function of Doxycide is to manage infestations of Doxies, also known as Biting Fairies.

  • Effect: When sprayed directly onto a Doxy, the solution immediately stuns or paralyzes the creature, rendering it immobile.
  • Usage: Once paralyzed, the Doxies can be safely collected and removed from a dwelling without risk of their venomous bite.
  • Toxicity: Doxycide is poisonous if ingested. Molly Weasley explicitly warned Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger to keep their mouths shut while spraying it. The potential for harm is further highlighted when Fred Weasley and George Weasley half-jokingly consider adding it to Percy Weasley's soup.

It is important to note that despite the “-cide” suffix in its name, Doxycide does not kill Doxies but merely incapacitates them.

The specific origins of Doxycide are unknown, but it is a standard and well-established solution in the wizarding world for dealing with common household pests. Its use is referenced in Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests, a book Harry Potter consults after being bitten. Its inclusion in wizarding literature indicates it is a commonplace item, readily available for purchase by witches and wizards.

Role in the Story

Doxycide features prominently in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix during the cleaning of 12 Grimmauld Place, the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix. The drawing room curtains were heavily infested with Doxies. Molly Weasley armed Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger with spray bottles of Doxycide to clear the infestation. During this process, Harry was bitten by a Doxy and had to find an antidote for its venom. This scene served to illustrate the decrepit state of the Black Family home after years of neglect. The event also provided an opportunity for Fred Weasley and George Weasley to secretly pocket several stunned Doxies. They later used the creatures' venom as a key ingredient for the Puking Pastilles part of their Skiving Snackboxes line for Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.

  • The name “Doxycide” is a portmanteau of “Doxy” and the Latin suffix -cide, which means “a killer of” or “an act of killing.” This is somewhat of a misnomer, as the substance only paralyzes the creatures, rather than killing them.
  • In the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix video game, the player must use Doxycide to clear the curtains at 12 Grimmauld Place, similar to the events in the book (video game).
