Flitterbloom

A Flitterbloom is a species of carnivorous magical plant. Its exact appearance is not described in detail, but it is known to be easily mistaken for a Screechsnap, suggesting a visual similarity between the two plants. The most notable property of the Flitterbloom is its aggressive, carnivorous nature. When agitated or misidentified, it is capable of attacking and biting. This trait makes its handling a key test of a student's Herbology knowledge and practical skill.

Role in the Story

The Flitterbloom is featured during the Ordinary Wizarding Level exams in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. While Harry Potter is waiting outside the greenhouse for his practical Herbology exam, he overhears the examination of Hannah Abbott. The examiner, Professor Sprout, is assessing Hannah, who is described as being very nervous. A loud shriek is heard from within the greenhouse, and Professor Sprout tells Hannah that the plant she was dealing with was a Flitterbloom, not a Screechsnap. The shriek implies that the plant bit Hannah as a result of her mistake. Professor Sprout then ends Hannah's exam, highlighting the practical dangers and high stakes of the O.W.L.s.

The name “Flitterbloom” is a compound word.

  • 'Flitter' means to move about lightly and quickly, or to flutter. This could hint at the plant's movement, perhaps giving it a deceptively delicate appearance before it attacks.
  • 'Bloom' simply means flower.

Together, the name suggests a “fluttering flower,” which contrasts with its dangerous, carnivorous reality, a common naming convention for magical creatures and plants in the wizarding world.

  • In the mobile video game Hogwarts Mystery (video game), Flitterblooms are items produced by a “Flitterbloom Hive” and can be used as ingredients in certain potions.
