Head
Introduction
The term Head is a title denoting a position of leadership and authority within the wizarding world, most prominently at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and the Ministry of Magic. At Hogwarts, the title can refer to a Head of House, a senior professor, or to the Head Boy and Head Girl, the two highest-ranking student leaders. At the Ministry of Magic, a Head is the witch or wizard in charge of a specific department or office.
Head of House
A Head of House is a professor at Hogwarts who is responsible for one of the four Hogwarts Houses. This role involves acting as a guardian and point of contact for the students in their House, handling disciplinary matters, and providing pastoral care. They are also responsible for selecting the House's Quidditch team captain and have the authority to award and deduct House Points. Known Heads of House during the series include:
Head Boy and Head Girl
The Head Boy and Head Girl are two seventh-year students selected to represent the entire student body. It is the highest student leadership position attainable at Hogwarts, considered a great honour that reflects exceptional academic achievement, outstanding character, and leadership ability.
Duties and Privileges
The primary responsibility of the Head Boy and Head Girl is to lead the school's team of Prefects. Their duties include:
- Supervising and organizing the Prefects' patrol schedules.
- Maintaining order in the corridors and on the Hogwarts Express.
- Assisting faculty with school events and guiding younger students.
- Acting as role models for the entire student population.
A significant privilege granted to the Head Boy and Head Girl is exclusive access to the Head's bathroom, a large and luxurious bathroom located on the fifth floor, which features a swimming-pool-sized bathtub with a complex tap system providing a variety of magical bubble baths.
Selection Process
The Head Boy and Head Girl are chosen by the current Headmaster or Headmistress at the beginning of the school year. While they are often, but not always, chosen from the existing body of Prefects, this is not a strict requirement. Remus Lupin noted that James Potter I was made Head Boy despite not having been a Prefect in his fifth year, a decision Albus Dumbledore likely made to acknowledge his significant personal growth.

Etymology
The word head originates from Old English, meaning the “top of the body” but also “top, summit” and “chief, leader.” Its usage in the wizarding world directly reflects this meaning, signifying a person in a position of ultimate authority within their specific domain, whether it be a Hogwarts House, the student body, or a Ministry of Magic department.
