Description and History
The Hogwarts Infirmary, commonly known as the hospital wing, is the primary medical facility for the students and staff of the school. It is located on the first floor of Hogwarts Castle and is managed by the highly competent and strict school matron, Madam Poppy Pomfrey. The infirmary is a spacious and meticulously clean room. It consists of a long ward lined with beds, each furnished with crisp white linen sheets. Privacy screens are available to be placed between the beds when required. At the far end of the ward is Madam Pomfrey's private office. Large windows run along one side of the room, offering a view of the school grounds, including the Whomping Willow in the distance. Madam Pomfrey runs the infirmary with firm authority, insisting on quiet and order, and is known to be very particular about limiting visitors to ensure her patients get adequate rest. The infirmary is equipped to handle a vast array of magical and mundane injuries, from common colds to severe curses. Madam Pomfrey's expertise in Healing Magic is such that she can mend broken bones in a single night with Skelegro and treat many other complex magical maladies on-site, only referring the most extreme cases to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
Role in the Story
The infirmary is a recurring and significant location throughout the Harry Potter series, often serving as a place of recovery, reflection, and crucial revelations.
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: Harry Potter spends three days here recovering after his confrontation with Professor Quirrell and Lord Voldemort. It is in the infirmary that Albus Dumbledore explains to Harry why Quirrell could not touch him and reveals details about the Philosopher's Stone and his mother's sacrifice. Ron Weasley and Neville Longbottom also have brief stays here.
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Hermione Granger is admitted twice: first, after a Polyjuice Potion mishap leaves her with feline features, and later when she is Petrified by the Basilisk. Harry is also a patient after Gilderoy Lockhart accidentally removes all the bones in his arm, requiring an overnight stay to regrow them with Skelegro.
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The infirmary plays a pivotal role in the book's climax. After the events at the Shrieking Shack and the Dementor attack at the lake, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are all brought here. It is from the locked hospital wing that Harry and Hermione use the Time-Turner to travel back in time, saving both Buckbeak the Hippogriff and Sirius Black.
- Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Following his duel with Lord Voldemort in the Little Hangleton graveyard, Harry is brought to the infirmary to recover. In a dark turn of events, Barty Crouch Jr., disguised as Alastor Moody, is subdued and brought to Madam Pomfrey's office, where a Dementor accompanying the Minister for Magic administers the Dementor's Kiss before he can be properly interrogated.
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: After the Battle of the Department of Mysteries, several members of Dumbledore's Army, including Hermione, Ron, Neville, and Ginny Weasley, are treated here for their injuries. Professor McGonagall is also briefly treated here after being hit by multiple Stunning Spells, and Dolores Umbridge is admitted after her harrowing encounter with a herd of Centaurs.
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: Ron is rushed to the infirmary after being accidentally poisoned. Later, following the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, the survivors gather here. Bill Weasley is treated for the severe facial wounds inflicted by the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: During the Battle of Hogwarts, the infirmary was undoubtedly used to its full capacity. Due to the high number of casualties, the Great Hall was repurposed as a supplementary triage center and temporary morgue, with Madam Pomfrey and other volunteers tending to the wounded there.
Known Areas Within
- Main Ward: The largest area of the infirmary, containing the beds for patients. This is where most of the healing and recovery takes place.
- Madam Pomfrey's Office: The private office of the school matron, located at the end of the ward. This room was used for the interrogation of Barty Crouch Jr. and was the site of his soul's destruction by a Dementor.
Behind the Scenes
- In the Warner Bros. film adaptations, the set for the infirmary is notable for its grand, cathedral-like appearance, featuring high, arched windows and intricately carved bed frames. Parts of the filming for the hospital wing took place at the Divinity School at Oxford University, renowned for its stunning fan-vaulted ceiling (film).
