Viktor Krum
Introduction
Viktor Krum was a world-famous wizard and professional Quidditch Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch Team. While still a student at the Durmstrang Institute, he was selected as their champion for the Triwizard Tournament held at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1994. Despite his sullen and intimidating demeanor, Krum proved to be fundamentally decent and developed a brief romantic relationship with Hermione Granger. His presence at Hogwarts challenged the prejudiced view that all those associated with Durmstrang Institute were proponents of the Dark Arts.
Biography
Triwizard Tournament
Viktor Krum first came to international prominence as the extraordinarily talented, yet young, Seeker for the Bulgarian National Quidditch Team during the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. Despite his team's loss to Ireland, Krum's capture of the Golden Snitch was seen as a masterful display of flying, solidifying his status as a sports hero. In the autumn of that year, he arrived at Hogwarts as part of the Durmstrang Institute delegation, led by Headmaster Igor Karkaroff, to compete in the revived Triwizard Tournament. The Goblet of Fire selected him as the Durmstrang champion. During his time at Hogwarts, he frequently visited the Hogwarts Library to see Hermione Granger, whom he eventually invited to be his partner at the Yule Ball.
- The First Task: Krum faced a Chinese Fireball dragon. He used a Conjunctivitis Curse to blind the dragon and retrieve the golden egg, but was penalized for accidentally crushing some of the dragon's real eggs in the process. He tied for first place with Harry Potter.
- The Second Task: To rescue Hermione Granger from the Great Lake, Krum used a form of partial Transfiguration to give himself a shark's head. While the spell was imperfect, he was the first champion to return to the surface with his hostage. He showed great concern for Hermione's well-being, earning him the respect of the judges, including Albus Dumbledore.
- The Third Task: Krum entered the enchanted maze in second place. Inside, he was placed under the Imperius Curse by Barty Crouch Jr., who was disguised as Alastor Moody. Under this influence, Krum attacked Cedric Diggory but was subsequently stunned by Harry Potter.
After the tragic conclusion of the tournament and the death of Cedric Diggory, Krum said his farewells to Hermione, giving her his address and inviting her to visit him in Bulgaria.
Second Wizarding War
Krum attended the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour in August 1997. There, he expressed his lingering feelings for Hermione Granger to Harry Potter, who was disguised as a Weasley cousin. During the reception, Krum became enraged upon seeing Xenophilius Lovegood wearing the symbol of the Deathly Hallows. Krum mistook it for the mark of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, who had murdered his grandfather many years prior. Harry later explained the symbol's true meaning to him.
Physical Appearance and Personality
Viktor Krum is described as tall, thin, and dark, with a large hooked nose and thick, black eyebrows. He has a duck-footed, slightly clumsy gait on land, which contrasts sharply with his incredible grace and skill as a flier. On the surface, Krum appears perpetually moody, sullen, and uncommunicative. However, this exterior hides a more sensitive and shy individual who is not adept at expressing his feelings. He is shown to be honorable, genuinely concerned for others' well-being, and fiercely loyal. He holds a deep-seated hatred for the Dark Arts and those who practice them, particularly Gellert Grindelwald.
Magical Abilities and Skills
- Flying: Krum was a world-class Quidditch player, widely regarded as one of the best Seekers of his generation. He was known for expertly performing the dangerous Wronski Feint.
- Duelling: While at Durmstrang, Krum was taught the Dark Arts, though he did not embrace them. He was proficient with jinxes and curses, as demonstrated by his effective use of the Conjunctivitis Curse during the First Task.
- Transfiguration: Krum was capable of performing advanced, non-verbal Transfiguration on himself to take on shark-like qualities for the Second Task. Though the transformation was incomplete, it was still a powerful piece of magic.
Possessions
- Wand: Krum's wand was made of hornbeam and dragon heartstring, measured ten and a quarter inches, and was described by Garrick Ollivander as being “quite rigid” and thicker than most. It was one of the last wands created by the famous wandmaker Gregorovitch.
Relationships
- Hermione Granger: Krum was deeply infatuated with Hermione. Their relationship during the Triwizard Tournament marked one of Hermione's first forays into romance and caused significant jealousy in Ron Weasley. They maintained a pen-pal correspondence for some time after the tournament.
- Harry Potter: Initially rivals, Krum and Harry developed a mutual respect. Krum appreciated Harry's actions in the maze, and at Bill and Fleur's wedding, he treated Harry with camaraderie.
- Igor Karkaroff: Krum was the prized student of his Headmaster, Igor Karkaroff. However, Krum was visibly disgusted by Karkaroff's cowardice when he fled Hogwarts upon learning of Lord Voldemort's return.
- Gellert Grindelwald: Krum held a profound and personal hatred for Grindelwald, who murdered his grandfather. This led to his angry confrontation with Xenophilius Lovegood over the Deathly Hallows symbol.
Etymology
- Viktor: A common Slavic name derived from Latin, meaning “victor” or “conqueror,” which befits his status as a champion athlete.
- Krum: This is likely a reference to Krum, a powerful and fearsome Khan who ruled Bulgaria in the early 9th century. This firmly roots the character in his Bulgarian nationality.
