The Lestrange Mausoleum is the ancestral tomb of the ancient and wealthy pure-blood Lestrange family. Located within the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, it is a large, imposing structure built from black granite, with the name “Lestrange” carved over the entrance. The tomb is surmounted by a statue of a raven, a symbol associated with the family. (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald screenplay) The interior is a dark, circular chamber. Its most significant feature is the intricately carved Lestrange family tree that covers the walls, documenting the lineage of the family. The tree primarily follows the male line, with the names, birthdates, and death dates of Lestrange men depicted as branches. The wives of these men are represented by smaller, flower-like portraits appended to their husbands' branches. The mausoleum also contains the coffins and remains of deceased family members, such as that of Corvus Lestrange V. A notable feature of the mausoleum is its powerful magic. One of its walls contains a concealed magical entrance, which can transform into a swirling, black, cloth-like portal. This portal serves as a hidden passageway to another location. (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald screenplay)

Role in the Story

The Lestrange Mausoleum is a pivotal location in the search for Credence Barebone's identity. Yusuf Kama, acting on an Unbreakable Vow, tracks Leta Lestrange, Newt Scamander, Tina Goldstein, and Credence to the tomb, believing Credence to be Corvus Lestrange V, the last male of that particular Lestrange line. Inside the mausoleum, Leta reveals the tragic truth about her family's past. Using the family tree on the wall as a visual aid, she recounts how she, as a child on a ship to America, swapped her constantly crying infant brother, Corvus, with another baby in an adjacent cabin. The ship later sank, and while the baby Leta took survived (who was in fact Aurelius Dumbledore), her real brother Corvus drowned. This revelation clears up the mystery of Credence's origins, proving he is not a Lestrange. Shortly after this confession, the mausoleum serves as a gathering point for followers of Gellert Grindelwald. A wall of the tomb transforms into a portal, through which his acolytes pass to attend his rally at the nearby Amphitheater of the Followers of Grindelwald. (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald screenplay)

  • Main Chamber: The central circular room that houses the coffins of the Lestrange ancestors and features the detailed, magically-carved family tree on its walls.
  • Hidden Portal: A specific section of the mausoleum's interior wall that serves as a magical gateway to the Amphitheater of the Followers of Grindelwald. (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald screenplay)

The Lestrange Mausoleum does not appear or is not mentioned in the original seven Harry Potter novels. Its existence, appearance, and role in the story are creations for the Fantastic Beasts film series, first appearing in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. (film) In the film, its location in the real-world Père Lachaise Cemetery adds a layer of historical grounding to the magical world. The design of the mausoleum is dark, ornate, and Gothic, reflecting the sinister reputation and pure-blood fanaticism of the Lestrange family. (film)
