Magorian
Introduction
Magorian was a prominent Centaur and the leader of the Centaur herd residing in the Forbidden Forest on the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is characterized by his deep pride, his distrust of wizards, and his fierce protection of Centaur traditions and dignity. Magorian plays a key role in several encounters within the Forbidden Forest, notably during Harry Potter's first year and during the confrontation with Dolores Umbridge in Harry's fifth year.
Biography
Magorian is first encountered in the Forbidden Forest when Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, and Neville Longbottom are serving detention. Magorian, along with Bane, confronts another Centaur, Ronan, who is speaking with Rubeus Hagrid. Magorian is later part of the group of Centaurs that arrives after Firenze saves Harry Potter from a hooded figure drinking Unicorn blood, later revealed to be Lord Voldemort sharing Professor Quirrell's body. Magorian furiously chastises Firenze for allowing a human to ride on his back, viewing it as an act of servitude and a betrayal of their kind. He declares that Firenze has set himself against his own herd. Years later, Magorian leads the Centaur herd when Hermione Granger lures Dolores Umbridge into the Forbidden Forest. When Umbridge displays her prejudice by calling them “filthy half-breeds” and attacking one of them, Magorian is enraged. He leads the Centaurs in overwhelming and carrying Umbridge away. He is also hostile towards Harry and Hermione for bringing Umbridge to them, but their confrontation is interrupted by the arrival of the giant Grawp. During the Battle of Hogwarts, the Centaur herd, led by Magorian, Bane, and Ronan, initially refrains from joining the fight. However, after witnessing the apparent death of Rubeus Hagrid and the courage of Harry Potter's defenders, Magorian gives a cry and leads the Centaurs in a charge against the Death Eaters, playing a crucial role in turning the tide of the battle.
Physical Appearance and Personality
Magorian is described as having a proud, sorrowful face with high cheekbones, long black hair, and a black horse's body. As a leader, Magorian is stern, proud, and deeply suspicious of wizardkind. He holds the honor and traditions of the Centaurs paramount and reacts with anger to any perceived slight or act of submission to humans. His leadership is assertive and at times aggressive, particularly when his people are threatened or insulted. Despite his hostility towards humans, he possesses a deeper sense of justice, ultimately choosing to fight against Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Magical Abilities and Skills
As a Centaur, Magorian is presumed to be skilled in the areas for which his kind is known:
- Divination: Centaurs are highly skilled in reading the stars to divine the future. Magorian, like Bane and Ronan, is shown to be preoccupied with planetary movements and their portents.
- Combat: Magorian is a formidable warrior, leading his herd in charges and using his powerful hooves as weapons.
- Intelligence: He is highly intelligent, possessing the ability to speak and reason on the same level as humans.
Possessions
While not explicitly stated, it is highly probable that Magorian, like other members of his herd, would possess a Bow and Arrows, the traditional weapons of the Centaurs.
Relationships
- Dolores Umbridge: Magorian feels nothing but contempt for Umbridge. Her bigotry and arrogance provoke his and the herd's wrath, resulting in them violently abducting her.
- Harry Potter: Magorian is suspicious and distrustful of Harry. He holds Harry partially responsible for the incident with Umbridge but ultimately fights on the same side as him during the final battle.
- Rubeus Hagrid: Hagrid has a long-standing, if wary, relationship with the Forbidden Forest Centaurs. While Magorian's herd can be hostile, Hagrid's courage during the Battle of Hogwarts appears to be one of the catalysts that convinces Magorian to lead the Centaurs into the fray.
Etymology
The name “Magorian” may be a reference to the Magi, the wise men from Christian tradition who were astronomers and followed a star to find the infant Jesus. This connects directly to the Centaurs' proficiency in Divination through stargazing. The name also has a powerful and slightly arcane sound, fitting for the proud leader of a magical race.
Behind the Scenes
In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Magorian's role is largely merged with that of Bane. His name is not mentioned (film). In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Magorian is the prominent Centaur who confronts Dolores Umbridge. He was portrayed by actor Michael Wildman (film).
