Description and History
Malfoy Manor is the ancestral stately home of the Malfoy family, a testament to their ancient pure-blood lineage and considerable wealth. The property is located in Wiltshire, England, and is accessed through a dark, narrow lane. Imposing wrought-iron gates, intricately shaped into menacing faces, guard the entrance and swing open without physical touch for those they recognize. A long, gravel driveway sweeps through manicured grounds, flanked by tall yew hedges. The most notable feature of the grounds is a flock of albino peacocks that roam freely. The manor itself is a handsome building, with a grand entrance that opens into a large, dimly lit hall. The hall is decorated with portraits of Malfoy ancestors and features a magnificent carpet. The interior is opulently furnished, though by the time of the Second Wizarding War, it carries a dark and oppressive atmosphere. The most prominent room described in the series is the drawing room, a large and elegant space with a marble mantelpiece, a crystal chandelier, and dark purple walls adorned with more portraits. Beneath this room lies a secret chamber where Lucius Malfoy historically hid his collection of Dark Arts artifacts from Ministry of Magic raids. The manor also contains a damp, musty cellar that was used as a makeshift dungeon to imprison opponents of Lord Voldemort. Historically, the manor served as the seat of the Malfoy family's power and influence in the wizarding world. During the Second Wizarding War, it was unwillingly offered up as a headquarters for Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters, a development that brought the Malfoys great fear and discomfort, effectively turning their home into a prison.
Role in the Story
While mentioned earlier in the series as the place where Lucius Malfoy hides his dark artifacts, Malfoy Manor becomes a central location in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
- Death Eater Headquarters: The manor serves as the primary meeting place for Lord Voldemort and his followers. The opening chapter of the final book details a high-level meeting in the drawing room, where Severus Snape delivers information about Harry Potter's departure from Privet Drive and Voldemort murders the captive Hogwarts professor, Charity Burbage.
- Prison and Interrogation Site: After Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are captured by a group of Snatchers led by Fenrir Greyback, they are brought to Malfoy Manor for identification. There, Bellatrix Lestrange viciously tortures Hermione Granger for information about the Sword of Gryffindor. Meanwhile, Harry and Ron are thrown into the cellar, where they discover other prisoners: Luna Lovegood, Dean Thomas, the wandmaker Garrick Ollivander, and the goblin Griphook.
- Site of a Major Confrontation: The events at the manor culminate in a desperate battle. After being summoned by Harry's broken two-way mirror, the house-elf Dobby appears in the cellar and helps the prisoners escape. During the ensuing conflict in the drawing room, Harry disarms Draco Malfoy, unknowingly winning the allegiance of the Elder Wand. Dobby is tragically killed by a knife thrown by Bellatrix Lestrange just as he successfully apparates the group to safety at Shell Cottage. This event provides Harry with crucial clues about the Horcruxes, as Bellatrix's terrified reaction to the Sword of Gryffindor directs him toward her vault at Gringotts.
