Metamorphmagus
Introduction
A Metamorphmagus (plural: Metamorphmagi) is a witch or wizard who possesses the rare, innate ability to alter their physical appearance at will. Unlike transformations achieved through Transfiguration or the use of potions like the Polyjuice Potion, this ability does not require a wand, incantation, or external ingredients. The talent is exceptionally rare and cannot be learned; an individual must be born with it. The primary example of a Metamorphmagus in the series is Nymphadora Tonks, whose abilities are a key part of her identity as both a person and an Auror. The trait is heritable, as demonstrated when her son, Edward Lupin (Teddy), is born with the same abilities.
Nature of the Ability
The ability of a Metamorphmagus is deeply connected to their being and can also be influenced by their emotional state.
- Innate and Heritable: As Remus Lupin explains to Harry Potter, “a Metamorphmagus is born, not made.” It is a hereditary magical trait. This is confirmed when Nymphadora Tonks's son, Edward Lupin, begins changing his hair colour shortly after his birth.
- Conscious and Subconscious Control: A skilled Metamorphmagus like Nymphadora Tonks can change their features with conscious effort, which is useful for disguises and expressing herself. However, strong emotions can trigger involuntary transformations. For example, Tonks's deep despair over her love for Remus Lupin causes her hair to become a mousy brown and lose its usual vibrancy. Her Patronus also changes its form due to these powerful feelings, a testament to how profoundly her magic is linked to her emotional core.
- Scope of Transformation: The ability allows for a wide range of changes, from subtle shifts in hair or eye colour to complete alterations of facial structure, age, and build.
Known Abilities and Demonstrations
Nymphadora Tonks is the main character through whom the abilities of a Metamorphmagus are demonstrated:
- Hair Alteration: She frequently changes her hair colour and style to suit her mood, favouring bubble-gum pink. She has also been seen with violet, red, and blonde hair.
- Facial Metamorphosis: Tonks can alter her facial features for comic effect or for disguise. She entertains Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley by transforming her nose into a pig snout and a duck's bill.
- Full Body Disguise: As an Auror, she uses her ability for stealth and infiltration. She disguises herself as a stooped, elderly witch while on guard duty for the Order of the Phoenix at the Department of Mysteries.
- Impersonation: While not shown in detail, it is implied she can impersonate others, though perhaps not with the flawless accuracy of Polyjuice Potion.
Edward Lupin (Teddy) also displays the ability from infancy:
- His hair is noted to change from black to turquoise to blond in the hours after his birth, confirming the trait is present from the very beginning of life.

Etymology
The term “Metamorphmagus” is a compound word derived from Greek and Latin roots that accurately describe the ability.
- Meta-: A Greek prefix meaning “change” or “transformation.”
- -morph-: From the Greek word morphē (μορφή), meaning “shape” or “form.”
- -magus: The Latin word for “wizard” or “magician.”
Thus, the name literally translates to “transformation wizard.”
Behind the Scenes
- On the Pottermore website, J.K. Rowling reiterated that the ability of a Metamorphmagus is a blood-borne, hereditary trait and cannot be acquired through study or any other magical means (Pottermore).
- In the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Tonks's transformations are shown as rapid, fluid shifts, often occurring in an instant without her needing to visibly concentrate (film).
