Mokeskin

Mokeskin is a magical material derived from the skin of a Moke, a silvery-green lizard native to Great Britain and Ireland. The skin retains the Moke's inherent ability to shrink at will, making it highly prized for creating secure containers such as purses and pouches. (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) The most notable object made from this material is the Mokeskin pouch given to Harry Potter by Rubeus Hagrid for his seventeenth birthday. It is described as a small, drawstring pouch that felt soft and leathery to the touch. When not in use by its owner, it shrinks to prevent others from seeing or accessing its contents.

The primary and most significant magical property of Mokeskin is its powerful concealment and security feature. A container made of Mokeskin, such as a pouch, will shrink when a stranger approaches it, making it unnoticeable or impossible for anyone but its owner to retrieve items from within. As Rubeus Hagrid explained, “Hide anything in there an' only the owner can get it out.” To use a Mokeskin pouch, the owner simply needs to think of the item they wish to retrieve and reach into the bag. The pouch does not appear to possess an Undetectable Extension Charm; its value lies in security, not in expanded storage capacity. The items Harry Potter stored within it were all relatively small. This is distinct from Hermione Granger's beaded handbag, which was explicitly enchanted with an Undetectable Extension Charm to hold a vast quantity of objects.

The use of Mokeskin is ancient, tied to the Moke creature from which it is harvested. Due to the valuable properties of the material, its use is controlled by the Ministry of Magic. (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) A Mokeskin pouch was a traditional wizarding coming-of-age gift. Rubeus Hagrid gave one to Harry Potter on his seventeenth birthday on 31 July 1997. Harry used this pouch constantly throughout the hunt for Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. He wore it around his neck for safekeeping, ensuring his most vital possessions were always with him and secure from theft.

Role in the Story

The Mokeskin pouch was an essential tool for Harry Potter during the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It served as a secure repository for his most important and secret items:

The pouch's security enchantment ensured that even when Harry was captured, his enemies could not access these crucial objects.

  • The Moke creature is described in detail in the supplementary book, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It is classified as XXX by the Ministry of Magic and its ability to shrink at will is the source of Mokeskin's unique properties.
  • In the film adaptation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Harry receives the pouch from Hagrid and uses it to store his items, but the specific magical property of it shrinking from anyone but its owner is not explicitly shown or discussed. (film)
