Mokeskin Pouch
Object Information
- Type: Magical Device, Storage
- Owners: Harry Potter (gift from Rubeus Hagrid)
- Maker: Unknown. Made from the skin of a Moke.
Description and Appearance
A Mokeskin Pouch is a small, drawstring bag made from the magically-treated hide of a Moke. The specific pouch owned by Harry Potter is described as a “small, drawstring bag of a sort of moleskin-like substance.” It is unassuming in appearance, which contributes to its security, as its true value and capacity are not outwardly visible.
Magical Properties and Usage
The Mokeskin Pouch possesses several powerful magical properties that make it an exceptionally secure and useful container.
- Undetectable Extension Charm: The pouch is enchanted with a powerful Undetectable Extension Charm, allowing it to hold a vast number of items, far more than its small size would suggest. Harry Potter used his pouch to carry numerous important and sometimes bulky objects simultaneously, including his wand, the Marauder's Map, the Invisibility Cloak, the Golden Snitch left to him by Albus Dumbledore, the shard of the two-way mirror from Sirius Black, and at various times, both the real and fake Slytherin's Locket Horcrux.
- Owner-Specific Access: The pouch's most significant feature is that its contents can only be retrieved by its owner. When Rubeus Hagrid gives the pouch to Harry, he explains, “hide stuff in there an' only the owner can get it out.” For anyone other than the owner, the pouch will remain tightly shut and inaccessible. This property is derived from the nature of the Moke itself, a creature that shrinks at the approach of strangers.
- Selective Retrieval: The pouch appears to have a magical connection to its owner's intent. On multiple occasions, Harry is able to retrieve a specific item he is thinking of simply by reaching into the pouch, and his fingers will immediately find it amongst the clutter of other objects within.
History
The only Mokeskin Pouch seen in the series was a seventeenth birthday present from Rubeus Hagrid to Harry Potter in 1997. Hagrid, considering it a proper wizarding gift, noted that such pouches were rare. Upon receiving it, Harry immediately used it to store his most treasured and important possessions before his departure from Number Four, Privet Drive. The pouch became an indispensable tool during the trio's hunt for Voldemort's Horcruxes. It safely carried all of Harry's vital magical items, keeping them secure even when the trio was captured and taken to Malfoy Manor. After his Holly and Phoenix Feather Wand was broken, Harry stored the pieces inside the pouch. Following the Battle of Hogwarts, he also briefly placed the Elder Wand inside it for safekeeping after using it to repair his original wand.
Role in the Story
The Mokeskin Pouch was a crucial tool for survival and secrecy during the Second Wizarding War. Its primary function was to ensure that Harry's most critical assets—the Deathly Hallows he possessed, the Marauder's Map, the mirror shard, and the captured Horcruxes—remained safe, concealed, and always on his person. The owner-specific security enchantment meant that even if Harry were disarmed or captured, his enemies could not access the pouch's contents. This seemingly simple gift from Hagrid proved to be one of Harry's most reliable and vital pieces of equipment throughout his final year, serving as a constant and secure magical repository.
Behind the Scenes
The properties of the pouch are explained by the nature of the creature from which it is made. According to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Moke is a silver-green lizard native to Great Britain and Ireland with the ability to shrink at will. Because of this ability, its hide is highly prized by wizards for making moneybags and purses that contract at the approach of any stranger, thus explaining the pouch's unique security feature.
