Description and Appearance
The Monster Book of Monsters is a particularly aggressive and difficult textbook used for the Care of Magical Creatures class. The book itself is large, with its title inscribed in green letters on the front cover. Its defining characteristic is its sentience and violent nature. When approached, the book will often snap, jump, and attempt to bite. The manager of Flourish and Blotts was forced to keep his stock locked in a large cage, where the books would viciously attack one another, tearing out pages in a “furious mass brawl.” He had to wear thick, dragon-hide gloves and poke the books with a knobbly walking stick to separate them for customers. Many students, including Harry and Ron, had to bind their copies shut with belts or Spellotape to prevent them from causing harm or escaping.
Magical Properties and Usage
The primary purpose of The Monster Book of Monsters is to serve as a comprehensive guide to various magical beasts. However, its own monstrous nature acts as a formidable security measure, preventing it from being opened by anyone who does not know the correct method. To safely open the book and access its contents, one must gently stroke its spine. This action pacifies the book, causing it to fall open and lie flat, allowing its pages to be read. If this method is not used, the book will remain hostile and unreadable. This crucial piece of information was provided to Harry Potter by Rubeus Hagrid, who found the book's behaviour highly amusing.
History
The book was assigned as required reading for third-year students by Professor Rubeus Hagrid for the `1993`-`1994` school year, during his first year teaching Care of Magical Creatures at Hogwarts. Hagrid's choice of such a dangerous textbook was an early indication of his unique, and often perilous, teaching style and his affinity for creatures that others would consider monstrous. The books caused considerable chaos both at Flourish and Blotts in Diagon Alley and among the students of Hogwarts. Most students were terrified of their copies and struggled to subdue them. Draco Malfoy, for example, complained loudly that his father would be furious about him having to own such a book, even though he later feigned a serious injury from a Hippogriff in the same class.
Role in the Story
Introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the book serves several functions. Primarily, it establishes the character of Rubeus Hagrid as a professor, highlighting his love for dangerous creatures and his obliviousness to the fear they inspire in others. The students' struggles with the book provide significant comic relief in the early part of the story. Furthermore, the book acts as a small plot device that reinforces the bond between Harry and Hagrid. While others are fighting their books, Harry is able to easily handle his after receiving advice from Hagrid, showcasing the trust and unique understanding between them. It subtly foreshadows the larger dangers and challenges that Hagrid's classes will present, such as the incident with Buckbeak the Hippogriff.
Behind the Scenes
- According to Pottermore, the author of The Monster Book of Monsters is Edwardus Lima, a wizard who lived from `1429` to `1561`. The book was allegedly banned at one point for causing readers to drop dead from fear. (Pottermore)
- In the film adaptation of *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, the book is given a more explicitly creature-like appearance, featuring multiple eyes on its cover and a large mouth filled with fangs along the page edges. It is also shown scuttling across floors on its own, using its cover flaps like clawed feet. (film)
- The Monster Book of Monsters appears as an interactive object or minor antagonist in various Harry Potter video games, where it often lunges at the player. (video game)
