nab-sack

Nab-Sack

  • Type: Magical Container, Goblin-made artifact
  • Owners: An unnamed Goblin, Scabior (briefly)
  • Maker: Implied to be Goblin-made

In the canonical novels, the Nab-Sack is described only as a “small, drawstring bag.” When tossed by the Snatcher Scabior, it appeared to be a simple, unassuming object. In the video game Hogwarts Legacy, the Nab-Sack is depicted as a magical bag that glows with a golden light when in use. It appears to be made of a sturdy, enchanted fabric capable of expanding and contracting as it captures and holds various creatures (video game).

The primary magical property of the Nab-Sack is its ability to contain objects or creatures within a magical, likely extradimensional, space, similar to an Undetectable Extension Charm. Its name, combining the colloquial verb “nab” (to seize or snatch) with “sack,” directly implies its function as a tool for capturing things. While its use in the books is not explicitly detailed, Bellatrix Lestrange's immediate and panicked recognition of the item suggests it is a well-known Goblin tool, possibly used for recovering or transporting valuables, perhaps illicitly. In Hogwarts Legacy, its function is greatly expanded upon. The player character receives a Nab-Sack from the House-Elf Deek to rescue endangered Magical Beasts. The sack is used to safely and harmlessly pull creatures into a pocket dimension within the bag, from which they can be released into magical vivariums inside the Room of Requirement. The bag's capacity can be upgraded through enchantment to hold more numerous and larger creatures (video game).

The Nab-Sack makes its only appearance during the Second Wizarding War. In the spring of 1998, a group of Snatchers led by Fenrir Greyback cornered an unnamed Goblin by a river and took his Nab-Sack from him. Shortly thereafter, the same group of Snatchers captured Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger and transported them to Malfoy Manor. When presenting their captives' belongings to Bellatrix Lestrange, the Snatcher Scabior also produced the Goblin's Nab-Sack. Bellatrix immediately recognized the artifact, her alarm escalating as she connected its presence with the Sword of Gryffindor and began to fear that the trio had broken into her vault at Gringotts.

Role in the Story

The Nab-Sack plays a small but crucial role in intensifying the tension during the Malfoy Manor scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Its appearance, immediately following the reveal of the Sword of Gryffindor, serves as a critical piece of evidence for Bellatrix Lestrange. It fuels her paranoia and rage, confirming her suspicion that the captives had not only found the sword but had also possibly colluded with a Goblin to rob her Gringotts vault. This mistaken belief directly leads to her brutal interrogation and torture of Hermione Granger in an attempt to extract information.

  • Etymology: The name is straightforward, combining “nab,” a slang term meaning to catch or seize suddenly, and “sack,” a common term for a bag. This reflects its purpose as a magical bag used for capturing things.
  • The Nab-Sack is a key item in the 2023 video game Hogwarts Legacy. Its role in the game as a tool for rescuing and collecting Magical Beasts provides the most detailed and functional understanding of the object, expanding significantly on its single, brief mention in the original novels (video game).
