Wizarding Organisations
Introduction
The wizarding world is structured by a variety of organisations, each with its own purpose, hierarchy, and influence. These groups range from official governmental bodies that legislate and enforce laws, to secret societies formed to combat dark forces, educational institutions, and social clubs. These organisations are fundamental to the social, political, and cultural fabric of magical society, often playing crucial roles in major historical events, including both Wizarding Wars.
Governmental and Official Bodies
- Ministry of Magic: The primary governing body of the magical community of Great Britain, responsible for creating and enforcing laws, regulating magical activity, and maintaining the International Statute of Secrecy. It is comprised of numerous departments, such as the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and the Department of Mysteries.
- Wizengamot: The high court of law and parliament within the British wizarding world. Presided over by a Chief Warlock or Witch, it conducts criminal trials and deliberates on magical legislation.
- International Confederation of Wizards: A global organisation that serves as a wizarding equivalent to the United Nations. It brings together representatives from various magical governments to address international magical cooperation, policy, and global-scale issues like the International Statute of Secrecy.
Educational Institutions
- Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: The premier magical boarding school in Great Britain, located in the Scottish Highlands. It educates young witches and wizards aged eleven to seventeen and is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
- Beauxbatons Academy of Magic: A magical school believed to be located in the Pyrenees mountains of France. Its students participated in the Triwizard Tournament held at Hogwarts.
- Durmstrang Institute: A magical school with a reputation for teaching the Dark Arts. Its location is a closely guarded secret, though it is known to be in a far northern region. Durmstrang also participated in the Triwizard Tournament.
Secret Societies and Resistance Groups
- Order of the Phoenix: A clandestine organisation founded and led by Albus Dumbledore to oppose Lord Voldemort and his followers during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. Its members included skilled wizards and witches dedicated to protecting the wizarding world and Muggles.
- Dumbledore's Army (D.A.): A secret student defence group founded at Hogwarts by Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. It was created to teach fellow students practical defensive magic in defiance of the Ministry-appointed High Inquisitor, Dolores Umbridge.
Dark Arts Factions
- Death Eaters: A terrorist group of dark wizards and witches led by Lord Voldemort. They sought to purify the wizarding race by eliminating Muggle-borns, overthrow the Ministry of Magic, and achieve power through fear and the practice of the Dark Arts. Members are identifiable by the Dark Mark on their left forearm.
- Inquisitorial Squad: A group of select Slytherin students, including Draco Malfoy, who were granted power and authority by Professor Dolores Umbridge during her tenure as High Inquisitor of Hogwarts. They acted as her enforcers, punishing students who broke her many decrees.
Advocacy and Social Groups
- Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare (S.P.E.W.): An organisation founded by Hermione Granger with the goal of campaigning for the rights and liberation of house-elves.
- The Slug Club: An exclusive club run by Professor Horace Slughorn for students he deemed to have talent, ambition, or important connections. Membership was by personal invitation only, and Slughorn often used his network of former members to his advantage.
Sporting Organisations
- Quidditch Teams: Professional and amateur organisations dedicated to the wizarding sport of Quidditch. These include national teams that compete in the Quidditch World Cup as well as league teams like the Chudley Cannons, Holyhead Harpies, and Puddlemere United. The four Hogwarts houses also field their own competitive Quidditch teams.
