Pride of Portree

The Pride of Portree is a professional Quidditch team that competes in the British and Irish Quidditch League. Founded in 1292 and based in the town of Portree on the Isle of Skye, they are one of the oldest and most established teams in the league. (Quidditch Through the Ages) The team's most successful period was in the 1960s, under the leadership of their celebrated Captain and Chaser, Catriona McCormack. She led the team to win the League Cup twice. Her daughter, Meaghan McCormack, continues the family legacy as the team's current Keeper. (Quidditch Through the Ages) The team is also credited with the invention of the Stonewall Chaser formation, a defensive flying strategy. (Pottermore)

Role in the Story

The Pride of Portree is first mentioned when Harry Potter is learning about the magical world's most popular sport. After Hermione Granger gives Harry the book Quidditch Through the Ages, Ron Weasley points out the Pride of Portree as one of the famous teams listed within. The team's name appears again during the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. A wizard pedlar is selling magical supporter rosettes that shout team names and cycle through the emblems of various teams, including the Pride of Portree.

While not a physical location with distinct areas, the Pride of Portree is comprised of its players. Notable members throughout its history include:

  • Catriona McCormack: A legendary Chaser and former Captain who played in the 1960s, leading the team to two league championships. (Quidditch Through the Ages)
  • Meaghan McCormack: The daughter of Catriona and the current Keeper for the team. (Quidditch Through the Ages)
  • Dougal McBride: A known player for the team, though his position and era of play are unspecified. (J.K. Rowling's Official Site)

The team's home, Portree, is the largest town on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. Its name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Port Rìgh, which translates to “king's port.” In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a plaque bearing the name “Pride of Portree” can be seen on the Quidditch trophy in the Hogwarts Trophy Room.
