Description and History
Located on the third floor of Hogwarts Castle, this office is traditionally assigned to the current Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Before Dolores Umbridge's arrival, it was occupied by figures such as Remus Lupin, whose office contained specimens of various Dark creatures, and Alastor Moody (Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise), who filled it with Dark Detectors like the Foe-Glass and Secrecy Sensor. Upon her appointment by the Ministry of Magic, Professor Umbridge completely transformed the office to reflect her own tastes, creating a space that Harry Potter found even more unsettling than its previous, more overtly dangerous iterations. The room was draped in lacy cloths and covers, with vases of dried flowers placed on every surface. The dominant colour scheme was a sickly, vivid pink. The most prominent and disturbing feature was a collection of ornamental plates that adorned one wall. Each plate featured a different, garishly-coloured, fluffy kitten, often adorned with a bow. These were not static images; the kittens were enchanted to move, frolic, and meow silently, which Harry found nauseating. The centerpiece of the office was Umbridge's large mahogany desk, where she conducted her business and, most infamously, her cruel detentions.
Role in the Story
Professor Umbridge's office served as her seat of power and a primary setting for her conflict with Harry Potter during his fifth year. It was a place of deceptive appearances, where a sickeningly sweet aesthetic masked cruelty and abuse.
- Detentions with the Black Quill: The office was the location for Harry's many detentions with Umbridge. Here, he was forced to use her special Black Quill, a torture instrument that carved the words he was writing—I must not tell lies—into the back of his hand, using his own blood as ink.
- Floo Network Communications: The fireplace in the office was connected to the Floo Network. Harry used it on one occasion to speak with Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. Umbridge nearly caught him, grabbing at the air where Sirius's head had just been.
- Interrogation Attempts: Umbridge brought Harry to her office after the discovery of Dumbledore's Army, attempting to dose him with Veritaserum to learn the whereabouts of Albus Dumbledore and Sirius Black. This was thwarted by Severus Snape, who claimed his supply had run out.
- Capture and Torture Threat: Towards the end of the school year, Harry, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood were captured by the Inquisitorial Squad and brought to the office. Desperate to learn of Sirius's location, Umbridge threatened to use the illegal Cruciatus Curse on Harry. It was here that Hermione cleverly concocted a story about a secret weapon in the Forbidden Forest to lure Umbridge away from the castle and into the hands of the Centaurs.
Behind the Scenes
In the film adaptation, *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, the set design for Umbridge's office meticulously brought the book's description to life. The overwhelming pinkness and kitsch decor were heavily emphasized to create a strong visual contrast between the office's appearance and the sinister events that occurred within it. The kitten plates were created by filming real kittens against a green screen and digitally compositing them onto the plates (film).
