Region
Introduction
Region was a Snatcher who operated under the authority of the Voldemort-controlled Ministry of Magic during the Second Wizarding War. He was a member of the gang, which included Fenrir Greyback and Scabior, that successfully located and captured Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the spring of 1998. The character and his name appear only in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and are not present in the original novel (film).
Biography
Region's activities are known only from his involvement in the capture of Harry Potter's group (film). In March 1998, he was part of a pack of Snatchers patrolling the countryside for Muggle-borns and Undesirables who were on the run. When Harry accidentally broke the Taboo curse by saying Voldemort's name, Region and his fellow Snatchers were able to Apparate directly to the trio's campsite (film). Alongside Scabior and Fenrir Greyback, Region helped overpower the trio. He was notably suspicious of Hermione Granger, whose face had been disfigured by a Stinging Jinx. He interrogated her about her name, which she gave as “Penelope Clearwater,” and questioned her blood status. He accompanied the group as they transported their captives to Malfoy Manor in the hopes of receiving a large gold reward (film). His fate following the skirmish at Malfoy Manor and the subsequent escape of the prisoners is unknown (film).
Physical Appearance and Personality
In the film adaptation, Region is depicted as a scruffy, unkempt man with dark, greasy hair and a beard, consistent with the appearance of other Snatchers. He wore drab, functional clothing suitable for living rough while on patrol (film). His personality was opportunistic and greedy, motivated by the potential for financial reward from the Ministry of Magic. He was confrontational and suspicious, as demonstrated by his sharp questioning of Hermione. However, he was also subservient to the leaders of his group, Scabior and Fenrir Greyback (film).
Magical Abilities and Skills
As a Snatcher, Region possessed at least a basic level of magical skill. He carried a wand and was proficient enough to be part of an effective team for capturing other wizards and witches. He and his group successfully utilized the Taboo curse on Voldemort's name to track their targets, though it is not known if he personally had the skill to cast such Dark Magic (film).
Possessions
Relationships
Region worked closely with other Snatchers, most notably Scabior and the werewolf Fenrir Greyback. As a registered Snatcher, he was an agent of the Voldemort-controlled Ministry of Magic and, by extension, served the interests of the Death Eaters (film). His primary targets were fugitives from this regime, including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger (film).
Etymology
The name “Region” is a common English noun for an area or territory. As a given name, it is extremely rare. It may have been intended as a nickname, possibly referring to the geographical area he was assigned to patrol as a Snatcher.
Behind the Scenes
The character of Region does not appear in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows novel. He was created specifically for the film adaptation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. In the book, the Snatchers in this scene, other than their leader Scabior and Fenrir Greyback, are unnamed. Region was portrayed by British actor Simon Grover in the film (film).
