Reparifarge

The Untransfiguration spell, Reparifarge, is mentioned only once in the original series, during the Fourth Task of the Triwizard Tournament. Inside the Hedge Maze, Viktor Krum, acting under the influence of an Imperius Curse cast by Barty Crouch Jr. (disguised as Alastor Moody), attacked Cedric Diggory. Krum attempted to use Transfiguration on Cedric, but the spell was only partially successful, causing Cedric's head to transfigure into what appeared to be a lopsided rock. Reacting quickly, Cedric used the Reparifarge spell on himself to reverse the faulty transfiguration and restore his head to its normal state before proceeding through the maze with Harry Potter. This use demonstrates that the spell is effective for self-application and can correct a Transfiguration that is incomplete or has gone wrong.

The specific requirements for learning Reparifarge are not detailed in the books. However, as it was successfully cast by Cedric Diggory, a highly skilled seventh-year student and Hogwarts Champion, it is likely considered advanced magic. It is probably taught as part of the N.E.W.T.-level Transfiguration curriculum, which deals with more complex magical reversals and corrections. As a Counter-Spell designed to reverse another spell's effects, Reparifarge does not have a known counter-spell of its own. Its function is inherently restorative, designed to undo magical alteration rather than to be blocked or deflected in a typical duel.

The incantation Reparifarge appears to be a composite of Latin and possibly French roots.

  • The first part, Repari-, likely derives from the Latin verb reparare, which means “to repair, restore, or renew.” This directly relates to the spell's function of repairing a failed Transfiguration.
  • The suffix, -farge, may be a creative magical suffix derived from the Old French verb forger, meaning “to forge” or “to shape.”

Combined, the name can be interpreted to mean “to repair the shape” or “to restore the form,” perfectly describing its magical effect.

  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the encounter between Cedric Diggory and an enchanted Viktor Krum is altered. Krum does not transfigure Cedric; instead, he is subdued by Harry Potter. Consequently, the Reparifarge spell is not used or mentioned in the film. (film)
  • The spell appears in the video game Harry Potter: Magic Awakened as a card that can reverse the transformation of allies and heal them. (video game)
