Rionach Gaunt
Introduction
Rionach Gaunt was a pure-blood witch and a descendant of Salazar Slytherin through the Gaunt family. Unlike the rest of her family, Rionach was kind-hearted and rejected their violent pure-blood supremacist ideology. Her story is central to the history of Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as she was the mother of its founder, Isolt Sayre. Rionach's defiance of her family's beliefs by marrying a Muggle led directly to her murder at the hands of her sister, Gormlaith Gaunt. (Pottermore)
Biography
Rionach was a member of the Irish branch of the ancient Gaunt family and the daughter of Gormlaith Gaunt. She grew up in a cottage in the Coomcallee valley in County Kerry, Ireland, a home known as Hag's Hangle. (Pottermore) Despite being raised within the fanatical pure-blood culture of the Gaunts, Rionach secretly developed a fondness for her Muggle neighbours. She eventually fell in love with a Muggle man named William Sayre, the son of a local farmer. They married in secret, which enraged her sister Gormlaith. Rionach and William had a daughter, Isolt Sayre, whom they raised in a loving home, using magic benevolently to entertain their daughter and help the animals around their farm. (Pottermore) When Isolt was five years old, Gormlaith attacked the family cottage. She set the house on fire, murdering both Rionach and her husband William. Gormlaith then “rescued” her niece Isolt from the flames, abducting her and raising her in isolation under the cruel and oppressive beliefs of the Gaunt family. Rionach's legacy of kindness and acceptance, however, lived on in her daughter, who eventually escaped and founded Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in North America with her Muggle husband, a testament to the values her mother had instilled in her.
