Description and History
The seventh floor is one of the uppermost levels of Hogwarts Castle, accessible via the Grand Staircase. It is a crucial area of the castle, housing the private quarters for an entire House as well as some of the school's most significant and secret locations. The architecture of the floor includes long corridors, some of which are patrolled by Argus Filch and Mrs Norris. One notable corridor features a large tapestry depicting Barnabas the Barmy's foolish attempt to teach trolls ballet. Opposite this tapestry is a stretch of blank stone wall that conceals the entrance to the Room of Requirement. Another key area is found at the top of a narrow, spiral staircase, which leads to a small landing where a silver ladder provides access to the Divination classroom through a trapdoor. The East Wing of the seventh floor contains the office of Charms Master, Professor Flitwick.
Role in the Story
The seventh floor serves as a backdrop for numerous pivotal events throughout the series, with its importance growing significantly in the later novels. In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, it is primarily known as the location of the Gryffindor Tower, accessed through the portrait of the Fat Lady. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the floor is the site of Sirius Black's infiltration of Hogwarts, where he slashes the Fat Lady's portrait in an attempt to enter the Gryffindor Common Room. This book also introduces Professor Sybill Trelawney's Divination classroom. The floor's role becomes central in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with the discovery of the Room of Requirement. Upon Dobby's suggestion, Harry Potter uses the room as the secret training ground for Dumbledore's Army. The corridor outside the room is also where Harry shares his first kiss with Cho Chang under a sprig of mistletoe. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry becomes obsessed with the activities of Draco Malfoy, who frequently disappears on the seventh floor. Draco is secretly using the Room of Requirement in its “Room of Hidden Things” configuration to repair a Vanishing Cabinet, which he ultimately uses to smuggle Death Eaters into Hogwarts. During Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the Room of Requirement on the seventh floor becomes a sanctuary for students resisting the regime of the Carrows. Led by Neville Longbottom, the room provides food, shelter, and a secret passage to the Hog's Head Inn in Hogsmeade. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry enters the room to find Ravenclaw's Diadem, one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes. The subsequent confrontation with Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle results in Crabbe unleashing uncontrollable Fiendfyre, which destroys the room and the diadem.
Known Areas Within
- Gryffindor Tower: The living quarters for Gryffindor students, including the Gryffindor Common Room and dormitories. The entrance is concealed behind the portrait of the Fat Lady, who requires a password for entry.
- Room of Requirement: A secret, unplottable room, also known as the Come and Go Room. It only appears when a person in great need walks past its location three times while concentrating on their need. Its various forms include a training hall, a storeroom for hidden objects, and a lavatory.
- Divination classroom: The classroom of Professor Sybill Trelawney, located at the very top of a spiral staircase. It is a circular, tower-like room filled with small tables, chintz armchairs, and the scent of perfume. Access is via a silver ladder and a trapdoor.
- Professor Flitwick's Office: Located in the East Wing of the seventh floor. It is from this office's window that Professor Flitwick tearfully watched Fred and George Weasley fly away from Hogwarts on their brooms.
- Corridor with Barnabas the Barmy's Tapestry: The corridor that houses the entrance to the Room of Requirement.
