Description and History
St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, often shortened to St. Mungo's, is the primary medical facility for the wizarding community in Great Britain. It was founded by the famous Healer, Mungo Bonham, in the 1600s to treat all manner of magical ailments, from spell damage to creature-induced injuries. The hospital is cleverly concealed from non-magical people. Its public-facing entrance is Purge and Dowse Ltd., a closed-down, red-brick department store in London described as “grubby and uninviting.” To gain entry, a witch or wizard must approach a specific mannequin in the front window—a dummy of a cross-eyed witch in a green nylon dress—and state their purpose. Visitors and patients then walk straight through the glass, which ripples like water, into the hospital's reception area. The interior of St. Mungo's is a stark contrast to its derelict exterior. The reception is a chaotic, crowded space filled with witches and wizards suffering from a wide variety of bizarre and magical conditions. It is staffed by a Welcome Witch who directs patients to the appropriate wards. The overall atmosphere is noisy and bustling, with the sounds of moaning patients and urgent calls from Healers. The hospital's emblem, a crossed wand and bone, is prominently displayed.
Role in the Story
St. Mungo's serves as a critical location in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, providing insight into the long-term consequences of dark magic and advancing several subplots.
- Arthur Weasley's Recovery: After being viciously attacked by Nagini at the Ministry of Magic, Arthur Weasley is brought to St. Mungo's. Harry Potter and the Weasley family visit him multiple times, allowing Harry a first-hand look at the wizarding world's medical practices. During one visit, they overhear a conversation between Cornelius Fudge and Lucius Malfoy.
- Permanent Residents: While visiting Arthur, Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger encounter two familiar figures on the permanent residents' ward. They find their former Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, who has amnesia and still enjoys signing autographs. More significantly, they discover Neville Longbottom visiting his parents, Frank Longbottom and Alice Longbottom. The Longbottoms were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange and other Death Eaters and remain in the hospital's long-term care, a moment that deepens Neville's character and backstory.
- Mysterious Ailments and Deaths: The group also sees Broderick Bode, a Ministry Unspeakable who was Imperiused to steal a prophecy. He is in a vegetative state on the Spell Damage ward and is later murdered there when a potted Devil's Snare is delivered to him as a Christmas gift.
- Other Notable Patients: In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Katie Bell is treated at St. Mungo's for several months after touching a cursed Opal Necklace. Professor Minerva McGonagall was also taken to St. Mungo's after being hit by four stunning spells simultaneously in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Known Areas Within
The hospital is organized by floor, with each level dedicated to a specific category of magical malady.

This floor deals with injuries from objects such as backfiring wands, cauldron explosions, and broom crashes. The main reception and the Welcome Witch's desk are located here.
- First Floor: Creature-Induced Injuries
This ward treats bites, stings, burns, and other injuries caused by magical creatures. It includes the “Dangerous” Dai Llewellyn Ward for Serious Bites, where Arthur Weasley was a patient.

- Third Floor: Potion and Plant Poisoning
Patients on this floor suffer from rashes, regurgitation, uncontrollable giggling, and other conditions caused by ingesting or touching dangerous potions and plants. Broderick Bode was initially treated here before his murder.
- Fourth Floor: Spell Damage
This floor houses patients with irreversible or long-term damage from charms, jinxes, hexes, and curses. The Janus Thickey Ward for permanent residents is located here, where Gilderoy Lockhart and the Longbottoms reside.

Behind the Scenes
- The name of the hospital's founder, Mungo Bonham, was revealed on the Pottermore website (Pottermore).
- The name “Mungo” is likely a reference to Saint Mungo, the patron saint of Glasgow, who was known as a healer.
- The name of the facade, `Purge and Dowse Ltd.`, is a pun. “To purge” means to cleanse or remove an impurity (like an illness), and “to dowse” is a method of finding something hidden, which is fitting for a concealed magical location.
