Description and History
St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is the primary, and likely only, hospital serving the wizarding community of Great Britain. It was founded in the 1600s by the famous Healer, Mungo Bonham. The hospital's entrance is ingeniously hidden from Muggle eyes. It is located within a condemned-looking red-brick department store called Purge and Dowse Ltd., with a sign on its door reading “Closed for Refurbishment.” To gain entry, a witch or wizard must approach a specific display window and speak to the rather dowdy mannequin within it. A small nod from the mannequin permits the visitor to walk through the glass as if it were water. Inside, the reception area is often crowded and chaotic, contrasting with the sterile order of a typical Muggle hospital. It is manned by a plump, blonde Welcome Witch. The walls are panelled with wood, and lighting is provided by crystalline bubbles that float up to the ceiling. The hospital is organised into several floors, each dedicated to treating specific types of magical afflictions. The hospital's official symbol, a wand crossed with a bone, is prominently displayed.
Role in the Story
St Mungo's is a significant location that provides care for wizards injured throughout the series and is the site of a crucial revelation for Harry Potter.
- In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it is mentioned as the treatment centre for Ministry of Magic officials who were bewitched during the chaos at the Quidditch World Cup.
- The hospital features most prominently in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Arthur Weasley is brought here after being viciously attacked by Nagini while guarding the Department of Mysteries. Harry, Hermione Granger, and the Weasley children visit him and, in doing so, encounter several other patients. They see a mentally scarred Gilderoy Lockhart, still recovering from his own backfired Memory Charm, and witness Neville Longbottom visiting his parents, Frank Longbottom and Alice Longbottom. This is how Harry learns the full truth: that Neville's parents were tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange and other Death Eaters using the Cruciatus Curse. They also encounter Broderick Bode, an Unspeakable who is later murdered within the hospital via a potted Devil's Snare.
- In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Professor Minerva McGonagall is sent to St Mungo's to recover after being hit by four separate Stunning Spells at once. Katie Bell is also treated there for several months after coming into contact with a cursed Opal Necklace intended for Albus Dumbledore.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it is mentioned that Ted Tonks helped a disguised Dirk Cresswell get to St Mungo's after he was injured.
Known Areas Within
St Mungo's is divided into floors based on the type of injury or malady.
- Ground Floor - Artefact Accidents: This ward handles injuries from backfiring wands, cauldron explosions, broom crashes, and similar incidents. Arthur Weasley was treated here in the 'Dangerous' Dai Llewellyn Ward.
- First Floor - Creature-Induced Injuries: This floor is for patients suffering from bites, stings, burns, and other wounds caused by magical creatures.
- Second Floor - Magical Bugs: This ward treats contagious magical illnesses, such as Dragon Pox, Spattergroit, and Vanishing Sickness.
- Third Floor - Potion and Plant Poisoning: This floor deals with rashes, regurgitation, uncontrollable giggling, and other afflictions caused by consuming or mishandling dangerous potions and magical plants. It was here that Broderick Bode was asphyxiated by the Devil's Snare.
- Fourth Floor - Spell Damage: This ward is for long-term or permanent damage caused by jinxes, hexes, and curses. Its patients include Frank Longbottom, Alice Longbottom, and Gilderoy Lockhart. Another patient, a witch named Agnes, was admitted due to having a furry face as a side-effect of a potion.
- Fifth Floor - Tearoom and Hospital Shop: A place for visitors to buy gifts and refreshments.
Behind the Scenes
- The hospital's founder, Mungo Bonham, is named after Saint Mungo, a 6th-century apostle of the Scottish Kingdom of Strathclyde and the patron saint and founder of the city of Glasgow. (Pottermore)
- The hospital's motto is “Ignorantia Sanitas”, which is Latin for “Ignorance is Health.” However, this appears to be a fan-created detail and is not found in the original novels.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the visit to St Mungo's is depicted quite faithfully, showing Arthur Weasley's recovery as well as the emotional scenes with Gilderoy Lockhart and the Longbottoms.
