The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a collection of themed areas at Universal Orlando Resort based on the Harry Potter series. Developed in consultation with J.K. Rowling and designers from the film series, the lands are designed to be a highly immersive recreation of the locations from the books and films. The project was officially announced in 2007. The first phase, Hogsmeade, opened on June 18, 2010, at Universal's Islands of Adventure park. This was followed by a major expansion, Diagon Alley, which opened on July 8, 2014, in the adjacent Universal Studios Florida park. The two lands are connected by a functioning replica of the Hogwarts Express, which serves as both an attraction and transportation between the two parks (Theme Park). The park's creation involved meticulous attention to detail to replicate the look and feel of the wizarding world, from the food and beverages like Butterbeer and Pumpkin Juice to the merchandise available in the various shops.

Role in the Story

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter does not appear in the original novels, as it is a real-world tribute to the series. Its significance lies in providing fans with a physical, interactive space to experience the world they read about. Certain elements created for the park, such as specific songs performed by Celestina Warbeck and the Ghouls, were written by J.K. Rowling and are considered canon-adjacent (Pottermore). The central narrative of the “Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts” ride is set during the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, depicting the trio's break-in from the perspective of Muggles visiting the bank at the same time (Theme Park).

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is split into two distinct lands, connected by the Hogwarts Express.

This area recreates the village of Hogsmeade and the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hidden behind a brick wall in the park's London waterfront area, this land recreates Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley.

A full-scale replica of the Hogwarts Express train that travels between King's Cross Station in the London area of Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade Station in Islands of Adventure. The journey features different character encounters and window visuals depending on the direction of travel (Theme Park).

  • J.K. Rowling maintained creative oversight on the project to ensure it remained faithful to her work. She reviewed plans for everything from the layout of the shops to the recipes for food items like Butterbeer (J.K. Rowling interview).
  • Stuart Craig, the production designer for all eight Harry Potter films, led the design of the theme park lands to ensure continuity with the cinematic universe (Warner Bros. documentary).
  • The wands purchased at Ollivanders can be interactive, allowing guests to perform “magic” at specially marked locations throughout both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, triggering special effects in shop windows and on statues (Theme Park).
  • Following the success of the Orlando resort, versions of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter have been opened at Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Studios Beijing (Theme Park).
