Verity

Verity is a young, cheerful witch who works as a shop assistant at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in Diagon Alley. Her single appearance is in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, where she serves to illustrate the bustling success of the Weasley twins' shop and provide information on some of their most popular products, such as Love Potions and Pygmy Puffs.

Verity's background and life outside of her employment are unknown. She is seen working at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes in August 1996 when Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger visit the shop before the start of their sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During their visit, a smiling Verity greets the trio and asks if she can help them. She is later seen demonstrating a purple Pygmy Puff, which Ginny Weasley later purchases and names Arnold. When Hermione questions the ethics of the shop's Love Potions, Verity explains their popularity and effectiveness, stating they last up to twenty-four hours depending on the boy's weight and the girl's attractiveness. She also reassures Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley that Fred and George have placed enchantments on the WonderWitch line of products to prevent them from being used on unsuspecting girls by boys.

The novels describe Verity only as a “smiling young witch”. Her cheerful demeanour suggests a friendly, enthusiastic, and helpful personality. She is a competent and knowledgeable salesperson, well-versed in the functions and features of the products sold at Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.

While no specific magical duelling or spell-casting abilities are demonstrated, Verity is a qualified witch employed at a prominent magical establishment. Her primary displayed skills are in customer service and salesmanship within the magical retail environment. She possesses detailed knowledge of joke products and potions, including their effects and any protective enchantments placed upon them by their creators, Fred Weasley and George Weasley.

Verity is not known to have any significant possessions. She presumably owns a wand, but it is never described. During her work, she handles shop products, such as Pygmy Puffs, but these are inventory rather than personal items.

Verity's employers are Fred Weasley and George Weasley, the owners of the shop. She appears to have a good working relationship with them, capably representing their business. She interacts professionally and amiably with customers, including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and Ginny Weasley.

The name Verity is an English virtue name derived from the Latin word veritas, meaning “truth”. This name may be intended ironically, as she sells products of deception and illusion like Love Potions, which induce infatuation rather than genuine love. Alternatively, it could reflect the “truth in advertising” of the Weasleys' products, which, unlike many joke items, perform exactly as they claim to.

  • Verity appears only once in the entire book series.
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Verity is portrayed by actress Olivia Fines. She is seen briefly in the background of the shop. (film)
