Warrington
Introduction
Warrington was a Wizard and a student in Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, two years ahead of Harry Potter. He was primarily known for his role as a Chaser on the Slytherin Quidditch team and as a member of Dolores Umbridge's Inquisitorial Squad. Throughout his time at Hogwarts, Warrington was a peripheral antagonist, frequently seen in the company of Draco Malfoy and consistently opposing Harry Potter and his friends.
Biography
Hogwarts Years
Warrington's time at Hogwarts overlapped with Harry's first five years. In the 1993-1994 school year, Warrington served as a Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team. During the final and decisive match of the season against Gryffindor, he scored the first goal of the game against Keeper Oliver Wood, giving Slytherin an early lead. Despite his contribution, Gryffindor ultimately won the match and the Quidditch Cup. During the 1994-1995 school year, Warrington, being of age, entered his name into the Goblet of Fire in the hopes of becoming the Hogwarts Champion for the Triwizard Tournament. His name emerged from the goblet, but he was not selected. Later that year, following a slanderous Witch Weekly article about Hermione Granger, Warrington joined Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle in mocking Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the Entrance Hall. The confrontation escalated into a duel where jinxes fired by Harry and Goyle collided, striking Goyle and Hermione instead of their intended targets. In his final year at Hogwarts (1995-1996), Warrington became a member of the Inquisitorial Squad, a group of students empowered by High Inquisitor Dolores Umbridge to enforce her strict regime and undermine Dumbledore's Army. He and other members patrolled the corridors, docking points from fellow students for minor infractions. Warrington was also part of the group of Slytherins who successfully captured Harry as he attempted to use the Floo Network in Umbridge's office to check on the well-being of Sirius Black. Toward the end of the school year, Warrington and other members of the Inquisitorial Squad attempted to stop members of Dumbledore's Army from flying to the Ministry of Magic. In the ensuing confrontation, he was powerfully hexed by Ginny Weasley with her signature Bat-Bogey Hex.
Physical Appearance and Personality
Warrington is described with seemingly contradictory terms in the novels. During a Quidditch match, he is referred to as “a large, hulking Slytherin”, suggesting a strong and imposing build suitable for a Chaser. However, when his name emerges from the Goblet of Fire, he is called the “weasel-faced Slytherin”. This suggests he possessed a large frame but had sharp, narrow facial features. His personality was typical of Malfoy's circle of Slytherins. He was arrogant, enjoyed mocking and bullying other students, and was opportunistic, readily aligning himself with Dolores Umbridge's oppressive authority for personal gain and power. His actions show a clear allegiance to the anti-Harry and anti-Dumbledore factions within the school.
Magical Abilities and Skills
- Quidditch: Warrington was a competent Quidditch player, serving as a Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team. He demonstrated skill in the role by scoring against a strong Gryffindor team.
- Jinxes: As a member of the Inquisitorial Squad and a participant in a hallway duel, Warrington had at least a functional knowledge of combative magic and jinxes. However, he was overpowered by Ginny Weasley's Bat-Bogey Hex, indicating his skills were not exceptional.
Possessions
- Wand: Warrington owned a wand, though its length, wood, and core are unknown.
- Broomstick: As a Quidditch player, he owned a broomstick. The exact model is not specified in the books.
Relationships
Warrington was a prominent member of Draco Malfoy's gang of Slytherins, which also included Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, and Pansy Parkinson. He was a loyal follower of Dolores Umbridge during her tenure as High Inquisitor. His primary antagonists were Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and other members of Dumbledore's Army, particularly Ginny Weasley, who famously hexed him.
Etymology
The surname Warrington is of English origin, derived from a large town in Cheshire, England. The name means “settlement by a weir,” a type of dam. His first name, Cassius, which is not mentioned in the original novels, is a Roman family name. Its meaning is debated, with possible roots meaning “hollow” or “vain.” Notably, Gaius Cassius Longinus was a leading instigator of the plot to assassinate Julius Caesar, giving the name connotations of betrayal and antagonism.
Behind the Scenes
