Wei Liao
Introduction
Wei Liao is a witch and a student from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. She is a non-canonical character created exclusively for the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire video game, in which she is selected as a Triwizard Champion. In the continuity of the game, she takes the place that Cedric Diggory holds in the original novel.
Biography
All biographical information for Wei Liao comes from the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire video game and is not part of the book canon.
In the video game's narrative, Wei Liao travels to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as part of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic delegation. The Goblet of Fire selects her as the Beauxbatons champion, alongside Harry Potter for Hogwarts, and Viktor Krum for Durmstrang Institute. In a significant deviation from the novel, the game's fourth champion is Fleur Delacour (also from Beauxbatons), and Cedric Diggory is not chosen (video game). Wei Liao competed in all three tasks of the Tournament. For the First Task, she faced a Welsh Green dragon to retrieve a golden egg. In the Second Task, she had to rescue her younger sister from the merpeople in the Black Lake. She also participated in the Third Task, navigating the enchanted maze to reach the Triwizard Cup (video game).
Physical Appearance and Personality
In the video game, Wei Liao is depicted with long, dark hair, often tied back in a ponytail. She wears the pale blue robes and pointed hat of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic uniform. Her personality is not deeply explored, but as a Triwizard Champion, she is portrayed as brave, competitive, and highly skilled (video game).
Magical Abilities and Skills
As a champion chosen by the Goblet of Fire, Wei Liao is established as a highly proficient and talented witch.
- General Magic: She is shown to be adept at a variety of spells, including powerful offensive and defensive magic, necessary to survive the challenges of the Triwizard Tournament (video game).
- Resilience: Her successful navigation of the three dangerous tasks demonstrates considerable magical stamina and courage.
Possessions
- Beauxbatons Uniform: She is seen wearing her school's distinctive blue silk uniform.
Relationships
- Family: Wei Liao has a younger sister, for whom she cared deeply. This is shown when her sister is chosen as the “hostage” for Wei Liao to rescue during the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament (video game).
- Competitors: Her main rivals in the Tournament were Harry Potter, Viktor Krum, and her fellow Beauxbatons student, Fleur Delacour. Her relationship with them was primarily one of competition (video game).
- Headmistress: Her Headmistress at Beauxbatons Academy of Magic was Olympe Maxime.
Etymology
The name “Wei Liao” is of Chinese origin. Both 'Wèi' (魏 or 韦) and 'Liào' (廖) are common Chinese surnames. The name was likely chosen by the game developers to add greater international diversity to the roster of champions.
Behind the Scenes
Wei Liao is a character who does not appear in the original seven Harry Potter novels, the films, or any other canonical material written by J.K. Rowling. She was created by the developers at EA UK for the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire video game, released in 2005. Her creation serves a specific gameplay purpose. In the game, the story is altered so that the Goblet of Fire selects four champions from four different houses/schools in some versions or contexts, with Wei Liao representing Beauxbatons. This allows for a different roster of characters for the Tournament events within the game. Her presence is one of the most significant deviations the video game makes from the original book's plot.
