Witch with the Trolley

The Witch with the Trolley, also known as the Trolley Witch, is the purveyor of sweets and snacks aboard the Hogwarts Express. A smiling, dimpled woman, she has been a constant presence on the train for generations, serving countless Hogwarts students on their journeys to and from school. While appearing as a simple vendor in the original novels, her role is primarily to provide refreshments like Pumpkin Pasties and Chocolate Frogs from her food trolley.

The witch's history is largely tied to her long-standing job on the Hogwarts Express. She was already working on the train during the school years of James Potter I and his contemporaries. Her first significant interaction with Harry Potter occurs during his first journey to Hogwarts. She offers her wares from the trolley, and Harry, unfamiliar with wizarding money and sweets, buys a large assortment of everything. This act of sharing her food with Ron Weasley helps cement their new friendship. She is seen again during the journey in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when the train is stopped by Dementors. After Remus Lupin repels the Dementor from their compartment, she is seen at the front of the train offering the driver a cup of tea. She continues her duties in subsequent years, pushing her trolley past the compartment occupied by Harry and his friends on their way to school in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In every appearance in the novels, she is performing her job diligently, serving as a familiar and unchanging part of the Hogwarts experience.

In her first appearance, the witch is described as “a smiling woman with dimples.” Her personality in the novels is consistently pleasant, friendly, and business-like. She performs her duties with a cheerful demeanor, always ready to serve the students on the train.

Within the seven original novels, the Trolley Witch does not demonstrate any specific magical spells or unique abilities. As a witch, she presumably possesses standard magical capabilities, but her role on the train does not require her to display them.

The Trolley Witch is a familiar, if distant, figure to generations of Hogwarts students. Her interactions are almost exclusively transactional, yet she represents a point of continuity and tradition for everyone who travels on the Hogwarts Express, from the Marauders' generation to Harry Potter's. She had brief, friendly exchanges with students like Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger throughout their school years.

As the character is never given a proper name in the original book series, there is no etymology to analyze. She is known only by her function and description.

  • Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: The stage play dramatically expands on the character's backstory and purpose. It is revealed that she is a formidable security measure for the train, created by Minister for Magic Ottaline Gambol. According to the play, she has worked on the train for one hundred and ninety years and is tasked with preventing any student from ever leaving the Hogwarts Express while it is in motion. In this version, her hands can transfigure into sharp spikes, and her sweet Pumpkin Pasties can explode like grenades. She confronts Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy when they attempt to jump from the roof of the train. (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child)
