Yeti

The Yeti, also known to Muggles as the Abominable Snowman, is a tall, nocturnal magical beast native to the mountainous regions of Tibet. It is believed to be a relative of the Troll and is a towering, human-like creature covered from head to foot in pure white fur. The Yeti is exceptionally dangerous and aggressive, earning it an XXXX classification from the Ministry of Magic's Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. This classification denotes a known wizard-killer that is impossible to train or domesticate. It is a carnivorous beast that will attack and attempt to devour any human or animal that crosses its path. Its only known vulnerability is a profound fear of fire, which can be used by wizards and witches to repel it.

The Yeti is mentioned on a few occasions, primarily highlighting its fearsome reputation. The fraudulent Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, Gilderoy Lockhart, famously claimed to have had a significant encounter with the creature, which he detailed in his best-selling book, Year with the Yeti. Given that Lockhart's career was built upon taking credit for the achievements of other wizards, his account is considered entirely fabricated. The existence and threat of the Yeti are canonically confirmed by an incident recorded in the history of the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. While researching a legal defense for the hippogriff Buckbeak, Hermione Granger read that the Committee had once handled a case involving a Yeti that carried off a Muggle child. This historical record validates the Ministry of Magic's dangerous classification of the species.

The name 'Yeti' is derived from the Tibetan “g.yag dres,” a phrase that translates to “rocky bear” or “bear-like animal.” This is the traditional name used by the Sherpa people of the Himalayas for the legendary creature known in Western culture as the Abominable Snowman.
