Description and History
The year 1996 marked the official, public beginning of the Second Wizarding War. Following Lord Voldemort's appearance at the Ministry of Magic in mid-1996, the wizarding community could no longer deny his return. The year was characterized by widespread fear, Death Eater attacks, and significant political upheaval. Summer 1996 The year began with the fallout from the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Cornelius Fudge was sacked as Minister for Magic and replaced by the former Head of the Auror Office, Rufus Scrimgeour. The new Minister met with the Muggle Prime Minister to inform him of the escalating war. During this period, Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange visited Severus Snape at his home on Spinner's End. Desperate to protect her son, Draco Malfoy, who had been tasked with a dangerous mission by Lord Voldemort, Narcissa begged Snape for help. Snape made the Unbreakable Vow, swearing to protect Draco, assist him in his task, and carry it out himself should Draco fail. Albus Dumbledore, whose right hand was now blackened and cursed from an encounter with a Horcrux (Marvolo Gaunt's Ring), retrieved Harry Potter from Number Four, Privet Drive. Together, they visited the retired Potions master Horace Slughorn and successfully persuaded him to return to Hogwarts. Harry then spent the remainder of the summer at The Burrow, where he received his O.W.L. results and was named Gryffindor Quidditch Captain. A trip to Diagon Alley saw Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger secretly follow Draco Malfoy into Borgin and Burkes, where they overheard him intimidating Mr. Borgin about a repair job. Autumn 1996 On the Hogwarts Express, Harry used his Invisibility Cloak to spy on Malfoy and his Slytherin companions. Malfoy, aware of his presence, immobilised Harry with a Full Body-Bind Curse and broke his nose once the train was empty, but Nymphadora Tonks found and rescued him. The Hogwarts school year commenced with significant staff changes: Severus Snape was finally appointed the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, and Horace Slughorn took over Potions. In his first Potions class, Harry used a textbook that once belonged to the “Half-Blood Prince,” following its handwritten instructions to brew a perfect Draught of Living Death. For this, Slughorn awarded him a small vial of Felix Felicis. Dumbledore began a series of private lessons with Harry, using the Pensieve to show him memories of Tom Riddle's past. The first two lessons covered the history of the Gaunt family and Dumbledore's first meeting with the young Tom Riddle at Wool's Orphanage. Meanwhile, Malfoy's mission began to unfold when fellow student Katie Bell was grievously cursed by an opal necklace she was meant to deliver to Dumbledore. Winter 1996 As Christmas approached, Ron Weasley was accidentally poisoned after first consuming a love potion meant for Harry, and then drinking poisoned oak-matured mead that Slughorn intended as a gift for Dumbledore. Harry saved Ron's life using a bezoar from Slughorn's stores. These events further convinced Harry that Malfoy was behind the attacks. During the Christmas holiday at The Burrow, Harry had a tense confrontation with Rufus Scrimgeour, who attempted to recruit Harry as a poster boy to boost Ministry of Magic morale. Harry refused, citing the Ministry's past failings and its continued imprisonment of innocents like Stan Shunpike.
Role in the Story
1996 is a pivotal year in the series, serving as the setting for the first half of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It firmly establishes the dark and fearful atmosphere of the Second Wizarding War now being waged in the open. The year is foundational for the final book's plot, primarily through Dumbledore's private lessons which introduce Harry—and the reader—to the concept of Horcruxes. Severus Snape's Unbreakable Vow is a critical event that sets up the novel's dramatic climax, while Draco Malfoy's secret mission within Hogwarts provides the central mystery and drives much of the year's conflict.
Known Areas Within
