Olympe Maxime

Olympe Maxime is the Headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. A woman of formidable stature and presence, she is a half-giantess, though she fiercely denies her heritage. Madame Maxime is introduced as a Triwizard Tournament judge and later serves as an envoy to the giants on behalf of Albus Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix. She is portrayed as an elegant, capable, and brave witch who commands respect, and she shares a brief romantic relationship with Rubeus Hagrid.

Madame Maxime first appears in 1994, arriving at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in a powder-blue, horse-drawn Beauxbatons carriage for the reinstated Triwizard Tournament. As Headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, she serves as one of the tournament judges alongside Albus Dumbledore and Igor Karkaroff. Throughout the school year, she shows great pride in her school and her champion, Fleur Delacour. She develops a close connection with Rubeus Hagrid, culminating in them attending the Yule Ball together. However, their budding romance suffers a setback when Hagrid openly discusses their shared half-giant status. Vehemently denying her heritage and insisting she is merely “big-boned,” a deeply offended Maxime temporarily distances herself from him. They later reconcile before the Third Task. She is present for the tragic conclusion of the tournament and is horrified by the death of Cedric Diggory and the news of Lord Voldemort's return.

In the summer of 1995, Maxime joins Rubeus Hagrid on a dangerous mission for the Order of the Phoenix. They travel to a remote mountain enclave in north-eastern Europe to act as envoys to the giants, hoping to persuade them to ally with Dumbledore's side before the Death Eaters could recruit them. They make some progress with the Gurg (leader), Karkus, by presenting him with magical gifts. However, their efforts are undone when Walden Macnair and other Death Eaters arrive and incite a rebellion, leading to the rise of a new, more brutal Gurg, Golgomath. Maxime and Hagrid are attacked and forced to flee, having only managed to persuade a few giants to listen to Dumbledore's message. During their escape, Maxime proves to be a powerful duellist.

Madame Maxime returns to Hogwarts in the spring of 1997 to pay her respects at the funeral of Albus Dumbledore. She sits with Rubeus Hagrid during the ceremony, showing that their friendship and mutual respect endured.

Madame Maxime is an exceptionally tall woman, described as being the same height as Rubeus Hagrid. She has a handsome, olive-skinned face, large, black, liquid-looking eyes, and a beaky nose. Her glossy black hair is typically gathered in a chignon at the nape of her neck. She dresses with great elegance, favouring outfits of black satin and silk. She carries herself with an air of authority and sophistication. Initially, she can seem imperious and is highly protective of her school's reputation. Maxime is also very proud and sensitive about her half-giant heritage, refusing to acknowledge it publicly. Despite this defensiveness, she is fundamentally brave, principled, and loyal to her allies, undertaking a perilous mission for the Order of the Phoenix and showing genuine sorrow and respect for Dumbledore.

As the Headmistress of a prestigious magical academy, Madame Maxime is an extremely powerful and competent witch.

• Beauxbatons Carriage: A colossal, powder-blue carriage, pulled by a dozen giant, winged, palomino horses. It serves as transportation and living quarters for her and her students while at Hogwarts.

• Rubeus Hagrid: Maxime and Hagrid share a mutual attraction and a brief romance, bonding over their shared experience as half-giants. While her refusal to admit her heritage causes a rift, they reconcile and work effectively as partners on their mission. Their relationship remains one of warm friendship.
• Albus Dumbledore: She holds Dumbledore in high esteem, trusting his judgment and willingly risking her life on a mission for the Order of the Phoenix at his request.
• Igor Karkaroff: Maxime has a cool and distrustful relationship with the Headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute, viewing him with disdain for his past as a Death Eater.

• Olympe: The French form of Olympia, which is derived from Mount Olympus, the mythological home of the gods and Titans of Greek mythology. This name alludes to her “giant” stature.
• Maxime: A French name derived from the Latin maximus, meaning “greatest” or “largest.” This is a direct reference to her exceptional height and imposing presence.

• In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Madame Maxime is portrayed by British actress Frances de la Tour.
• J.K. Rowling confirmed on her original website that Olympe Maxime is, in fact, a half-giantess, just as Hagrid suspected.
