Cabbage
Object Information
- Type: Magical Plant, Potion Ingredient
Description and Appearance
Cabbages in the wizarding world appear much like their Muggle counterparts, being leafy green vegetables. However, magical varieties and specimens exist that differ significantly in size and property. Rubeus Hagrid was known to successfully cultivate cabbages of a gigantic size in his vegetable patch at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. A notable magical variant is the Chinese Chomping Cabbage. While its exact appearance is not described in detail, it is a carnivorous plant known to be aggressive. Healers at St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries believed it could be tempted with flies.
Magical Properties and Usage
Cabbages are utilized in both mundane and magical ways in the wizarding world.
- Herbology: Cabbages, particularly dangerous magical varieties like the Chinese Chomping Cabbage, are a subject of study in Herbology. Handling such plants requires specific knowledge of their properties to avoid harm.
- Food and Drink: Cabbages are a common food ingredient. A recipe for toadflax and cabbage stew was offered as a consolation prize on the Wizarding Wireless Network program, Witching Hour.
Role in the Story
Cabbages are mentioned in several distinct contexts throughout the series, highlighting their place in wizarding life.
- In Harry's first year, he, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger visited Rubeus Hagrid's hut following the troll incident and noted the “giant-sized cabbages” flourishing in his garden patch.
- During the year of the Triwizard Tournament, a toadflax and cabbage stew recipe was mentioned as a prize on a Wizarding Wireless Network radio show hosted by the popular singer Celestina Warbeck.
- After being Imperiused and later cursed at the Ministry of Magic, Unspeakable Broderick Bode of the Department of Mysteries was sent to St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. While there, he was transfigured into a plant that the Healers mistook for a very rare Chinese Chomping Cabbage. They were attempting to care for the plant by feeding it flies, unaware of its true human nature.
