Cedric Diggory
Introduction
Cedric Diggory was a highly talented and popular wizard from Hufflepuff House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was a Hogwarts Prefect and the Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team. Selected as the Hogwarts Champion for the Triwizard Tournament in 1994, Cedric embodied the Hufflepuff traits of fairness, loyalty, and dedication. His tragic murder by Peter Pettigrew on the orders of Lord Voldemort marked the Dark Lord's return to a physical body and served as a catalyst for the Second Wizarding War.
Biography
The son of Amos Diggory, Cedric Diggory began his education at Hogwarts in 1989 and was sorted into Hufflepuff House. He quickly proved himself to be a gifted student and a skilled Quidditch player, eventually becoming both a Prefect and the Seeker and Captain of his house team. During a 1993 Quidditch match against Gryffindor, he caught the Golden Snitch only after Harry Potter fell from his broom due to the presence of Dementors. Displaying immense sportsmanship, Cedric immediately offered to replay the match, an offer which was declined. In 1994, Cedric put his name into the Goblet of Fire and was chosen as the Hogwarts Champion for the restored Triwizard Tournament. He developed a friendly rivalry with Harry Potter, who was controversially selected as a fourth champion. The two champions assisted each other throughout the tournament; Harry warned Cedric about the dragons of the First Task, and in return, Cedric helped Harry solve the riddle of the golden egg for the Second Task. During this time, Cedric began dating Cho Chang of Ravenclaw, and they attended the Yule Ball together. In the First Task, Cedric transfigured a rock into a dog to distract his dragon, a Swedish Short-Snout, and retrieve the golden egg. For the Second Task, he used a Bubble-Head Charm to rescue Cho Chang from the Great Lake. He entered the final task, a hedge maze, tied for first place with Harry. Inside the maze, they helped each other overcome various obstacles. Upon reaching the Triwizard Cup simultaneously, they agreed to take it together and share the victory for Hogwarts. However, the cup was a Portkey that transported them to the cemetery in Little Hangleton. There, they were confronted by Lord Voldemort and Peter Pettigrew. On Voldemort's command, “Kill the spare,” Pettigrew murdered Cedric instantly with the Avada Kedavra curse. Harry Potter managed to escape the cemetery and returned to Hogwarts with Cedric's body. Cedric's death was a profound shock to the wizarding world. Though the Ministry of Magic attempted to portray it as a “tragic accident,” Albus Dumbledore truthfully announced to the school that Cedric had been murdered by Lord Voldemort, heralding the start of the Second Wizarding War. During Harry's duel with Voldemort in the cemetery, Cedric's echo emerged from Voldemort's wand during Priori Incantatem and asked Harry to return his body to his parents.
Physical Appearance and Personality
Cedric was described as being “exceptionally handsome” with a straight nose, dark hair, and bright grey eyes. He was tall, well-built, and carried himself with an air of quiet confidence. His personality was a perfect reflection of Hufflepuff House values. He was fundamentally fair, kind, and modest. Despite his popularity and considerable talent, he remained humble and treated others with respect, including Harry Potter, his main rival. He was brave and determined, facing the dangers of the Triwizard Tournament with courage, but his strong moral compass and sense of sportsmanship were his defining traits.

- Flying: He was an excellent flier, serving as both Seeker and Captain for the Hufflepuff Quidditch team.

Relationships
- Amos Diggory: Cedric had a close and loving relationship with his father. Amos Diggory was immensely proud of his son's achievements, often boasting about him, particularly his victory over Harry Potter in Quidditch.
- Harry Potter: Cedric and Harry shared a relationship of mutual respect and friendly competition. Cedric consistently treated Harry with fairness, even when the rest of the school was hostile towards him. Their decision to share the tournament victory solidified their camaraderie moments before Cedric's death. Harry was deeply traumatized by witnessing the murder and felt a lasting sense of responsibility.
- Hufflepuff House: Cedric was the pride of Hufflepuff. He was a popular student who was admired for his talent, leadership, and embodiment of the house's core values of loyalty and hard work.
Etymology
- Cedric: The name is often attributed to Sir Walter Scott's 1819 novel Ivanhoe. It may derive from the Old English name Cerdic. In Welsh, it could be related to “caru” (to love) or “caredig” (kind), which aligns with his character.
- Diggory: A surname of Cornish origin. It is also the surname of Digory Kirke, a central character in C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, a series that influenced J.K. Rowling. The French word égaré, meaning “lost” or “strayed,” has been suggested as a possible, tragic linguistic connection, foreshadowing his fate.
Behind the Scenes
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Cedric Diggory was portrayed by actor Robert Pattinson (film).
- In the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, an alternate timeline is explored where Cedric is humiliated in the Triwizard Tournament and survives.
