Marcus Flint

Marcus Flint was a Wizard and a pure-blood student from the Flint family, sorted into Slytherin House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and and Wizardry. He was the Captain and a Chaser for the Slytherin Quidditch team during Harry Potter's early years at the school. Flint was known for his aggressive, brutish nature and a “win-at-all-costs” mentality, often resorting to cheating and foul play. He served as a recurring antagonist to Harry and the Gryffindor Quidditch team on the Quidditch pitch.

Flint was already the Slytherin Quidditch team Captain by Harry Potter's first year. During Gryffindor's first match against Slytherin, Flint scored the first goal and was reprimanded by Madam Hooch for deliberately blocking Angelina Johnson in a move that resembled an attempt to knock her off her broomstick. He was present at the End-of-Term Feast where Slytherin lost the House Cup to Gryffindor. In his second year, Harry encountered Flint and the Slytherin team during their practice on the Quidditch pitch. Flint revealed that his team had been gifted brand-new Nimbus Two Thousand and One brooms by Lucius Malfoy, securing Draco Malfoy's position as the new Slytherin Seeker. During the subsequent match against Gryffindor, Flint and his teammates played an exceptionally dirty game, seemingly trying to injure Harry rather than win the match. By Harry's third year, Flint was still attending Hogwarts, leading Harry to surmise that he must have had to repeat his seventh year. During the Gryffindor versus Ravenclaw Quidditch match, Flint, along with Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle, attempted to sabotage Harry by disguising themselves as Dementors to frighten him. The plan backfired when Harry, enraged, successfully cast a corporeal Patronus Charm that knocked the four Slytherins over. Professor McGonagall subsequently punished them with fifty House Points deducted from Slytherin and detention for all involved. Flint is not mentioned in the novels after this event.

Marcus Flint is described as having a “trollish” appearance. A prominent feature was his large, leaden-grey, and somewhat crooked teeth. His physical description complements his personality, which was brutish, aggressive, and unsportsmanlike. He displayed a classic Slytherin arrogance and a clear disdain for Gryffindors. Flint's primary motivation appeared to be winning the Quidditch Cup, a goal he pursued through intimidation and cheating without any apparent remorse. His attempt to impersonate a Dementor highlights a cruel and malicious streak, as he deliberately targeted one of Harry Potter's greatest fears.

  • Quidditch: Flint was a proficient Quidditch player, serving as both Chaser and Captain for the Slytherin team for at least three consecutive years. His leadership, however, relied more on brute force and dirty tactics than on strategic finesse.
  • General Magical Ability: As a Hogwarts student who reached his N.E.W.T. years (even if he had to repeat one), Flint would have possessed a standard level of magical ability. However, no specific aptitude for any branch of magic is mentioned in the novels.

Flint's primary rival was Oliver Wood, the Gryffindor Quidditch team's Captain. Their interactions were consistently hostile, limited to tense pre-match handshakes and on-pitch confrontations. He was also a direct antagonist to Harry Potter, often targeting him during matches. As captain, he led teammates such as Draco Malfoy, Terence Higgs, Miles Bletchley, and Adrian Pucey. He was a member of the Flint family, a surname included in the “Sacred Twenty-Eight” list of truly pure-blood wizarding families, suggesting his family held prejudiced views on blood purity. A relative, Josephina Flint, served as Minister for Magic from 1819-1827 (Pottermore).

  • Marcus: A traditional Roman name, possibly derived from Mars, the Roman god of war. This name reflects Flint's combative and aggressive nature on the Quidditch pitch.
  • Flint: A hard, sedimentary rock, a type of quartz. The name evokes imagery of hardness, toughness, and an unyielding, brutish nature, which aligns with his “trollish” physical description and personality.
  • In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the line about Flint having to repeat a year is spoken aloud by Harry to Ron Weasley. In the books, this is an internal thought by Harry that occurs in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
  • Marcus Flint was portrayed by Jamie Yeates in the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Yeates wore a set of prosthetic teeth to achieve Flint's book-accurate appearance.
  • The Flint family is listed on the “Sacred Twenty-Eight”, a list of twenty-eight British wizarding families that were supposedly still “truly pure-blood” by the 1930s, published in the Pure-Blood Directory (Pottermore).
