The Invisibility Charm is a powerful and advanced piece of magic that conceals a target from sight. Unlike the permanent and infallible invisibility granted by the Invisibility Cloak of the Deathly Hallows, the effects of an Invisibility Charm are temporary, can be broken by certain counter-spells, and may fade over time. This charm is considered difficult magic, and few wizards are shown to use it effectively. Albus Dumbledore was a master of the spell, stating he did not need a cloak to become invisible. He used it to remain unseen in Hagrid's Hut during the events leading to Aragog's discovery and again before Buckbeak's apparent execution. He also used a “useful charm” to make Griphook invisible during the break-in at Gringotts. The powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was also known to be capable of casting this charm. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Xenophilius Lovegood explains the key differences between a true Invisibility Cloak and objects enchanted with an Invisibility Charm. He notes that most so-called invisibility cloaks are simply travel cloaks with an Invisibility Charm or a Bedazzling Hex placed upon them, which lose their efficacy with age. The Invisibility Charm should not be confused with the Disillusionment Charm, which is less powerful. The Disillusionment Charm does not grant true invisibility but rather causes the target to blend seamlessly into their surroundings, like a chameleon. Alastor Moody cast a Disillusionment Charm on Harry Potter to help conceal him during his flight from Number Four, Privet Drive to Grimmauld Place.

Learning to cast an effective Invisibility Charm is a mark of a highly skilled and powerful wizard. It is not taught as part of the standard Hogwarts curriculum, where the Disillusionment Charm is favoured for practical concealment. Despite its power, the charm has several known weaknesses and counters
