The Lestrange Family

The Lestrange family is an ancient, wealthy, and fanatical Pure-blood wizarding family, renowned for their devout loyalty to Lord Voldemort and their deep involvement in the Dark Arts. As one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight, they held a strong belief in Pure-blood supremacy and were among the most feared and sadistic of all the Death Eaters. The family's actions, particularly those of Bellatrix Lestrange and her husband Rodolphus, were central to some of the most heinous crimes of the First and Second Wizarding Wars.

Steeped in Dark Magic and aristocratic pride, the Lestranges were unwavering in their support for Lord Voldemort's cause. Their ideology was one of absolute Pure-blood dominance, and they viewed Muggle-borns, Muggles, and any who sympathized with them with violent contempt. During the First Wizarding War, the Lestranges were among Voldemort's inner circle. After his first downfall, a group of four Death EatersBellatrix Lestrange, her husband Rodolphus Lestrange, her brother-in-law Rabastan Lestrange, and Barty Crouch Jr.—captured the Aurors Frank and Alice Longbottom. They used the Cruciatus Curse to torture the couple for information about Voldemort's whereabouts, driving them into permanent insanity. For this crime, they were sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban. The Lestranges remained fanatically loyal during their incarceration. In the mass breakout of 1996, Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan escaped to rejoin their master, playing significant roles in the Second Wizarding War. The family's name became synonymous with cruelty, insanity, and unwavering devotion to the Dark Lord.

The Lestranges possessed a high-security vault deep within Gringotts Wizarding Bank. The vault was ancient and protected by powerful enchantments, including the Gemino Curse and the Flagrante Curse, which caused any object to multiply and burn red-hot upon being touched by a thief. It was also guarded by a half-blind dragon. Lord Voldemort entrusted Bellatrix Lestrange with one of his Horcruxes—the Cup of Hufflepuff—which she stored in the vault for safekeeping. In 1998, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger successfully broke into the Lestrange vault with the help of the goblin Griphook to retrieve and destroy the Horcrux.

  • Lestrange: The name is derived from the French l'étrange, meaning “the strange one.” This aptly describes the family's unhinged and fanatical nature, particularly that of Bellatrix.
  • Bellatrix: A Latin name meaning “female warrior.” It is also the name of a bright star in the constellation Orion, a naming convention common in her birth family, the House of Black.
  • Rodolphus: A Latinized form of the Germanic name Rudolf, meaning “famous wolf.”
  • In the film adaptations, Bellatrix Lestrange is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, whose performance defined the character's manic and theatrical cruelty for a generation of fans. Rodolphus and Rabastan have very minor, mostly non-speaking roles.
  • The family is listed as one of the “Sacred Twenty-Eight” pure-blood families in the Pure-Blood Directory published by Cantankerus Nott in the 1930s (Pottermore).
  • Leta Lestrange: A major character in the Fantastic Beasts film series, portrayed as a complex and tragic figure from a different branch of the family. She was a close friend of Newt Scamander at Hogwarts (film).
