Lysander Scamander
Introduction
Lysander Scamander is a wizard of at least half-blood heritage, the twin son of Luna Lovegood and Rolf Scamander. Along with his brother, Lorcan Scamander, he represents the next generation of the wizarding world following the end of the Second Wizarding War. His brief appearance in the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows establishes him as a contemporary of the Potter and Weasley children.
Biography
Lysander was born to Luna Lovegood and Rolf Scamander sometime after the Second Wizarding War, likely around the year 2007. Through his father, he is the great-grandson of the famed Magizoologist Newt Scamander. His only appearance in the series occurs in the epilogue, set on 1 September 2017. He and his twin brother, Lorcan Scamander, are present on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters with their mother. Luna Lovegood mentions to James Sirius Potter that her sons are “just a bit younger” than him and would be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry the following year, indicating they were ten years old at the time. She appeared to be fondly searching for her sons amidst the crowd, suggesting they had wandered off.
Physical Appearance and Personality
The novels provide no description of Lysander's physical appearance. While his personality is not detailed, the fact that his mother Luna Lovegood was distractedly looking for him and his brother on the busy platform may suggest that the twins share some of their mother's dreamy and free-spirited nature.
Magical Abilities and Skills
As Lysander had not yet begun his formal magical education at Hogwarts during his appearance, his specific magical abilities and skills are unknown. It is confirmed that he is a wizard and was due to receive his Hogwarts letter.
Possessions
Lysander is not known to possess any specific items of note. It can be presumed he would have acquired a wand and other necessary school supplies before attending Hogwarts.
Relationships
- Family: Lysander's immediate family is composed of his mother, Luna Lovegood, his father, Rolf Scamander, and his identical twin brother, Lorcan Scamander. His maternal grandparents are Xenophilius Lovegood and the deceased Pandora Lovegood. Through his father's lineage, his paternal great-grandparents are Newt Scamander and Porpentina Goldstein (Pottermore).
- Contemporaries: Lysander is a contemporary of the next generation of the Potter and Weasley families. He was on the platform at the same time as James Sirius Potter, Albus Potter, and Rose Granger-Weasley, and was set to start Hogwarts a year after James.
Etymology
- Lysander: The name is of Greek origin (Λύσανδρος, Lysandros), meaning “liberator” or “one who sets free.” This could be a reference to his parents' generation, which fought to liberate the wizarding world from Lord Voldemort. It was also the name of a famous Spartan admiral.
- Scamander: This surname is also of Greek origin, referring to a river god from Anatolian mythology who fought in the Trojan War. The name firmly connects Lysander to the family of his great-grandfather, Newt Scamander.
Behind the Scenes
- J.K. Rowling first confirmed that Luna Lovegood would marry Rolf Scamander, a fellow naturalist and the grandson of Newt Scamander, in a web chat following the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (J.K. Rowling interview, 2007).
- Lysander, his brother Lorcan, and his mother Luna were not depicted in the film adaptation of the epilogue in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2* (film).
