The Keepers

The Keepers were a secret organization of four exceptionally powerful professors from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their sworn duty was to safeguard a potent and dangerous form of Ancient Magic from the wider wizarding world, believing its power was too great to be wielded by anyone. The concept of The Keepers originates from the video game Hogwarts Legacy (Hogwarts Legacy).

The Keepers were formed in response to the actions of their colleague, Isidora Morganach, who discovered a way to extract and contain pain from individuals, leaving them devoid of emotion but creating a powerful magical repository. The founders—Percival Rackham, Charles Rookwood, Niamh Fitzgerald, and San Bakar—witnessed the devastating potential of this magic when Isidora's attempt to remove all pain from her father resulted in a powerful, uncontrolled magical force that destroyed a part of the hamlet of Hogsmeade (Hogwarts Legacy). Horrified by this event, the four professors confronted and ultimately had to kill Isidora to stop her. They then took it upon themselves to seal away the repository of pain-based magic she had created and to hide all knowledge of this specific branch of Ancient Magic. Their primary purpose became to ensure that no one else would ever repeat Isidora's mistake, and they created a series of elaborate trials to test any future individual who might share their rare ability to see and wield Ancient Magic (Hogwarts Legacy).

The known members of The Keepers are primarily its four founders, who continued to guide potential successors through portraits long after their deaths (Hogwarts Legacy).

All members of The Keepers were masters of Ancient Magic, a rare and powerful form of magic distinct from what is commonly taught at Hogwarts or used by the Ministry of Magic. Their philosophy was one of extreme caution and secrecy. They believed that while the ability to wield Ancient Magic was not inherently evil, the specific practice of extracting emotion as a power source was a corruption of magic that posed an existential threat to the world. Their goal was not to use the magic themselves, but to contain it and test the character of anyone who might one day discover it (Hogwarts Legacy).

  • The Map Chamber: A secret chamber located deep beneath Hogwarts that served as their headquarters. It contained a magical floor map and the portraits of the four founders, which they used to communicate with and guide their successor (Hogwarts Legacy).
  • Pensives: Each Keeper left behind a Pensive with key memories, allowing their successor to witness the events surrounding Isidora Morganach firsthand and understand the gravity of their mission (Hogwarts Legacy).
  • The Trials: The Keepers constructed four complex trials within and around Hogwarts to test the magical skill, intellect, and moral character of a potential new Keeper (Hogwarts Legacy).
  • The Repository: A vast cavern beneath the school containing the raw, volatile magic extracted by Isidora, which The Keepers sealed away (Hogwarts Legacy).

The Keepers are a narrative element created specifically for the video game Hogwarts Legacy (2023) and are not mentioned in the original seven Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling. Their existence and the concept of “Ancient Magic” as portrayed in the game are an expansion of the lore for the game's plot and do not originate from the primary book canon.
