The Thunderbird

The Thunderbird is a large, majestic avian beast native to the arid climate of Arizona. (Pottermore) It is described as having a head similar to that of an Eagle or, in the opinion of Newt Scamander, a Hippogriff. (film) The creature is closely related to the Phoenix and possesses multiple pairs of powerful wings that shimmer with patterns resembling clouds and sun rays. (film), (Pottermore) The Thunderbird's primary and most famous magical ability is atmokinesis, the power to generate storms. By flapping its wings, it can create powerful thunderstorms, complete with wind and rain. (film) This ability is the source of its name. In addition to this, Thunderbirds are highly attuned to danger and can sense it approaching, a trait that makes them and their magical byproducts highly valuable. (Pottermore)

The Thunderbird is a revered creature within the North American wizarding community, influencing both education and wandlore.

  • Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry: Thunderbird is one of the four houses of the North American school of magic, Ilvermorny. The house was named by co-founder Chadwick Boot for his favourite magical beast and is known to favour students who are adventurous. (Pottermore)
  • Wandlore: The tail feather of a Thunderbird is a powerful wand core used by the American wandmaker Shikoba Wolfe. Wands containing a Thunderbird feather core are considered extremely powerful but difficult to master. They are particularly adept at Transfiguration and possess the ability to sense danger, sometimes pre-emptively casting protective curses on their own. (Pottermore)

A specific Thunderbird named Frank was instrumental in events that transpired in New York in 1926. Frank had been illegally trafficked to Egypt, where he was rescued by Newt Scamander. Newt's purpose in visiting America was, in part, to release Frank back into his native homeland of Arizona. (film) After the destructive battle with the Obscurus in a New York subway, which was witnessed by numerous No-Majs, Frank played a pivotal role in the containment effort. At the request of Newt, Frank was released into the sky above the city. He generated a massive, city-wide rainstorm, which the MACUSA used as a medium to disperse a diluted Swooping Evil venom. This mixture acted as a mass Memory Charm, erasing the memories of the incident from the non-magical population. Having fulfilled his role, Frank was free to fly home to Arizona. (film)
