Ginevra Molly Potter (née Weasley)

Ginevra “Ginny” Molly Weasley was a pure-blood witch, the youngest of Arthur and Molly Weasley's seven children, and the first girl born into the Weasley family for several generations. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1992 to 1999 and was sorted into Gryffindor house. During her first year, she came under the influence of Lord Voldemort's memory, preserved in a diary, and was forced to open the Chamber of Secrets. Ginny grew from a shy girl into a confident and powerful witch. She was an accomplished Quidditch player, playing as both Chaser and Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. She was also a key member of Dumbledore's Army and fought in several major battles of the Second Wizarding War, including the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and the Battle of Hogwarts. She eventually married Harry Potter and they had three children: James Sirius Potter, Albus Severus Potter, and Lily Luna Potter.

Ginny was born on 11 August 1981. She grew up at The Burrow with her six older brothers. Eager to attend Hogwarts, she would sneak into the family broom shed from a young age and practice flying on her brothers' broomsticks.

After the Second Wizarding War, Ginny pursued a career as a professional Quidditch player for the Holyhead Harpies. After retiring from the sport to raise a family with Harry Potter, she became the senior Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet. (J.K. Rowling interview, Pottermore)

Ginny is described as having the traditional Weasley family traits: flaming red hair, which she often wore in a long mane, and a freckled complexion. She has bright brown eyes and is noted for her striking beauty as she grows older. Initially, Ginny was extremely shy, especially around Harry Potter. However, after her ordeal in the Chamber of Secrets, she blossomed into a confident, forceful, and witty young woman. She is fiercely independent, brave, and has a fiery temper, not unlike her mother. Ginny is also known for her sense of humour and popularity. She is an intensely loyal friend and is not afraid to stand up for what is right, or to defend her friends from mockery.

  • Harry Potter: After a long-held childhood crush, Ginny developed a deep and meaningful relationship with Harry. He saw her as a source of strength and comfort, and she became his primary love interest and, eventually, his wife.
  • Weasley family: As the youngest child and only daughter, Ginny was very close to her parents and six older brothers. She had a particularly strong and supportive bond with her mother, Molly Weasley, and shared a sense of humour with Fred and George Weasley.
  • Hermione Granger: Ginny and Hermione Granger were very close friends, confiding in one another throughout their time at Hogwarts. They eventually became sisters-in-law.
  • Luna Lovegood: Ginny was one of Luna Lovegood's closest friends at Hogwarts. She accepted Luna's eccentricities without question and would fiercely defend her from bullies.
  • Neville Longbottom: Ginny was good friends with Neville Longbottom, attending the Yule Ball with him in her third year and co-leading the resistance at Hogwarts with him in her sixth.
  • Ginevra: The Italian form of Guinevere. In Arthurian legend, Queen Guinevere is the wife of King Arthur, linking Ginny to the broader legendary themes within the series.
  • Molly: A traditional diminutive of Mary. Ginny shares this middle name with her mother, Molly Weasley.
  • Weasley: J.K. Rowling has stated that she has always liked weasels, and the name also connects to the family's red hair and their home, The Burrow.
  • In interviews, J.K. Rowling has stated that she always intended for Ginny and Harry to end up together, describing Ginny as “tough, not in an unpleasant way, but she's gutsy.”
  • In the film adaptations of the Harry Potter series, Ginny's role and personality are significantly reduced. Her assertive nature, sense of humour, and skills as a Quidditch player are less prominent than in the novels.
  • Ginny Weasley was portrayed by actress Bonnie Wright in all eight films.
  • Information about her later career with the Holyhead Harpies and the Daily Prophet was revealed by J.K. Rowling in interviews and on the Pottermore/Wizarding World website.
